For what it’s worth, this is typically exactly how I respond to WTB threads that I think have a price that’s off the mark - by quoting previous sales. (Although my initial comment in this thread was just commenting on the condition of the PSA 10 Master Scroll that sold recently.)
But after this conversation I’m not sure whether most people would think that sort of response is a good thing or not, so I may just not bother going forward.
I think the main reason why these threads derail is because many people (especially newer members, myself included) are not aware of the extent of discussion that should be present in these threads. And even if you get all older members to understand, there will always be new people who keep making the same mistakes.
So another option I thought of would be to update the buy sections rules with the following rule:
Doing this would have some advantages:
Mods don’t have additional work because they don’t have to lock the thread2. Since the thread stays open, OP can bump in accordance with the rules3. The responsibility to include this additional text in the post lies with the OP, who is much more likely to have read the rule thread before posting than someone who just searches threads by new topics and clicks out of interest. This means there’s a higher chance that the additional text will actually be included in the post.
Lastly, I’m against the idea of abandoning wtb threads, as someone suggested. I think it it has its use, as many successful sales that resulted from wtb threads prove.
@hyruleguardian, commenting on the quality of the psa 10 was still a helpful post as it still helps with price data.
@darky97, This does seem a good idea, only downside is wtb threads can provide useful market/price data that can help people pin a price down for a scarce card to form a starting base for offers.
Including the text/disclaimer could also be optional allowing people to choose what type of thread they want.
@darky97 I don’t mind that being an option if you don’t want people commenting about price but I still like having information shared on the threads rather than PM’s so we have more info and data points.
Apologies for further discussing on your buy thread but yes, this is my main personal reason for appreciating the E4 buy section - the somewhat public information. Answers like “I wouldn’t sell my copy below xx!” are unproductive, but I think there’s a huge value for everybody in actual information about (private) sales or public offers that were not accepted when talking about certain rare cards that don’t have frequent sales.
Maybe the problem is that often the only place where those cards are talked about are the buy threads that thematize them.
@burnedos Yeah, I really think it’s more of a politeness and sensitivity issue. If everyone is polite, receptive to information and keeps speculation within reason I think everyone will be happy.
Don’t name call people who actually own the cards because they don’t want to sell at half market so you can make money by selling at actual market value.
Offer market value
As someone who has most of the items people request in buy threads, I typically never respond as I can sell them easier and for more on eBay. Literally sold one of the items in this thread on eBay for more while this thread was live.
Ultimately this isn’t a structure problem, it’s a lowball/ignorance problem. E4 isn’t a marketplace. The buy section is just a perk of E4. You have access to the largest collectors in the hobby for free. Don’t abuse that privilege by trying to pinch pennies. This section is the most work. I don’t want the day to come where we nuke the buy section. For now this thread is done.
