There is no doubt that fakes are getting better with time. Most experienced collectors can tell fairly easily but the huge number of “proxies” and fakes on the market right now will be bought up by new collectors in huge quantities and they might not know enough before selling them on. This just goes to show that vigilance is key and detailed pictures (or better, seeing the product in person) will have to be the norm going forward.
I have had sellers refusing to send more pictures of items in the past and it sends immediate red flags, whether or not the product is legit.
I wrote a lenghty text but deleted it. In conclusion: You’re wrong.
At this point I think the most annoying thing is the peoples ignorance about the printing process. I’m by far no expert and my english is too bad to explain it in detail, so I feel kinda sorry that I’m of no help.
I don’t see a problem with this, Easier to peel off so you can stick it onto whatever you want. I find this much harder with the english neo holos. When I try peel them off to stick on my laptop or wall they just tear…
I will say the fact it was a box sale and not a personal box opening do legitimize his intentions a lot more. I think what happened is deep down he knew it had a good chance of being fake from the get go, but he knew to not waste a good opportunity to drag the video out and gain back some revenue (lost on the box i presume) thru potential YT views. Can’t really fault him either way. He just tried to make the best out of a crap situation from a business prospective.
I will say on a side note that box screamed fake to me right from the get go before he even tore the shrink-wrap. The card stock, holo patterns, off text, consistent same c/uc card order just all confirmed it. By the 2nd or 3rd pack full on alarm bells were ringing for me.
The packs art didn’t match a real one he had either, which was kind of a red flag beyond some of the packs being open in the box. Not just the colors looked a little faded, the Aipom on the back looked totally different.
Was an absolute fascinating video to watch live. I’ve never seen anything like it. PokeRev handled it professionally and I’m glad he opened the rest of the box so we could understand its contents.
Oh yeah. He wouldn’t have titled the upload of the stream “I was scammed | Unboxing the FAKE $10,000 Pokemon Cards” if he wasn’t trying to salvage the video for all it could give - honestly, a sound business move. I still personally dislike the clickbait all-caps “FAKE” and the trend of putting large amounts of money in the title that all pack openers use to try and draw in more views…but business is business I suppose.
Well said. At the end of the day this raised a ton of awareness. As long as the community can communicate and reliably source product we will always be a step ahead.
Most collectors here don’t remember them but during 2000-2005 every time I visited America (Florida) I found fake Japanese boosters everywere on fleemarkets.
It was like here in Europe going to Spain and buy any Pokemon, no original stuff only fake things.
Also the plastic around Japanese older boxes is so different from the English product.
I haven’t bought a Japanese box the last 10 years, perhaps the wrapper is still the same.
In what scenario would he have acted thats ‘not milking it’? He’s supposed to just immediately end the stream when he thinks they might be fake? He wants to make 100% sure as it is a huge headache if it IS fake. He just wanted to 100% confirm his suspicions and explain everything. Also fake packs or resealed packs have been graded by PSA before.
Crazy video and I think he handled it very well. For me personally it just reinforces just getting graded cards, there is definitely some risk in sealed product unless you are buying from very reputable sources.
