I have a somewhat similar story as you do @furashu. Quarantine happened and I was at home at my computer, bored, sitting on way too many zoom calls. So, I started getting into basketball cards. Started flipping those pretty aggressively. I was getting mail constantly. But as much as I enjoyed watching basketball, I just… didn’t connect to the cards. I was in a private community about cards and some people started discussing Pokemon, but I hadn’t played in 20 years and I just wasn’t sure I’d connect. Then I saw this one guy who I followed for a different reason start making YouTube videos about Pokemon cards. And they were great videos. And then I just… fell down the rabbit hole. I became instantly hooked. And that was it. It’s only been a month, but man, I’m hooked. As for how I found E4… I posted on Instagram that I was looking to buy cards, a guy messaged me, and he said he has found other buyers/sellers on this forum. So, voila.
I was being sarcastic. I remember when Pokémon go came out was when everyone and their moms got back into Pokémon. Then pratte made a video emphasizing that statement was a FALLACY. I got a good chuckle out of it so here we are.
Someone mentioned to me that this particular Evolutions charizard has now hit over 9,000 in the pops. It sounded like a lot which made me curious to see how how it compares to the total pops of most sets. Needless to say it really puts it into perspective. The Evolutions pop is on steroids. I haven’t updated the data since my last chart on the 10th. The dotted reference line is set to 9,000. The scale is logarithmic and is set to start at 200.
People are always quick to mention that only 199 of those 9,077 charizards are PSA 10’s, but that’s not a particularly low total number when compared to most charizard pops.
It is worth mentioning that the base set Unlimited charizard is 19,418 total pop. Base Unlimited has 436 PSA 10’s.
1st Edition Charizard has 2,933 total pop. 121 PSA 10 and 655 PSA 9.
Anyway, again, just something to mull over.
@rainbowgx , imagine what the pop will be like a year from now! Probably significantly over double what it currently is? The incentive to send in Evolutions has only become so strong over the past 8-9 months. So I have to imagine that most of the supply is still in the backlog.
Also, it’s kind of funny that nearly as many Evolutions Charizards have been graded as the entirety of Neo Discovery, a set which was released nearly 20 years ago lol.
Yeah, i would love to see some stats on print run numbers on modern…
I think the vintage market is just heating up overall. Give new collectors another 12-36 months.
So Evolutions Charizard is still at about 2.19% of cards being sent, actually being graded 10’s. Comparing to base at 2.24% and 1st Edition at 4.12%. I’m sure we’ll see a lot more 10’s in the next 6-18+ months for sure, but we’ll also see waaay more 7,8,9’s as well. I’d say it’s still a pretty difficult card to grade all things considered
I think it’s safe to assume that the print run numbers would astound us.
Case in point: 9000 Evolutions Charizard holos have been graded after 4.5 years. And 19,000 Base Unlimited Charizards have been graded after 22 years. This is despite the fact that Evolutions Charizard holo is more difficult to pull than Charizard was in the original Base Set. So those 9000 Evolutions Charizards may very well represent more product opened than the 19,000 Base Set Charizards. All of this plus Evolutions Charizards are being graded at a faster rate (see: pokemonprice.com population numbers).
The other way to look at it is Base is 22 years old and grading wasn’t even around when it was released.
Evolutions is at half that after 5 years old with only 9,000 graded- despite being printed and opened during the peak in popularity of pokemon, grading, and collecting, and flipping.
No way to tell if it peaked early and plateaued because of current hype or if it is exponentially growing.
Take a look from sold psa10 evolutions Pikachus. I have a difficult times to accept those semi modern card prices compared to old wotc cards… They are not even difficult to pull. Weird things going on.
If you’re referring to the reverse holo… it technically is harder to pull any individual reverse holo in this set than any of the other cards (including the full arts). Also - it can be somewhat-difficult to grade with centering/whitening issues. Some say it scratches easily too, but I haven’t noticed that being too much of an issue.
