eBay buyers with overly high expectations

This is why I seriously appreciate sellers who honestly list potentially gem cards as NM/Mint and claim they can’t say for sure its mint or gem mint because they aren’t qualified graders. This puts it on the buyer to make sure they know what they are looking for and to ask questions when they are needed. 3/4 of the time if I’m dropping cash on a raw card I’m going to ask for more pictures.

Also, steer clear from listings where the only descriptor they use for a card’s condition is “pack-fresh”. Every instance of this I’ve seen is a straight 7 EX-NM condition card. But you can’t really say much, for all you know they walked around with that pack in their back pocket for a week.

Huh? Steer clear of “Pack Fresh”? Boy! I couldn’t disagree more. I’ve been using pack fresh for almost two decades cause it can mean only one thing…at least mint unless it’s just a dishonest seller. Plus, anytime another seller uses that term I love it and have never been disappointed. Basically, an inexperienced seller without a clue about condition, wouldn’t ever use that term.

Sorry maybe not steer clear, but rather tread lightly. I’ve just seen too many instances of using the phrase to over-hype a listing. I see what you mean by its usefulness for honest sellers who don’t like to/can’t refer to card condition alone, but I’ve pulled some cards fresh from packs that look worse than cards I’ve kept in binders from childhood on occasions, so I just don’t like using the term as a metric for quality.
My rationale is that pack fresh doesn’t necessarily equal mint in every instance, and the term could easily be used to deceive someone into thinking their getting a super minty item when the description NM/Mint would have been more appropriate.

I guess we’ve just had different experiences with pack fresh. Having opened 10s of thousands of packs I know what they look like and every listing I ever rec’d that said pack fresh were mint…not nm/m.
Maybe I shouldn’t say anything cause id be better off if nobody bough pack fresh lol.

Ugh here comes a new one. Sold a lot of 500+ bulk cards basically in played condition and get an email about how I didn’t list the condition as some cards have bends and creases, and I only listed them as played. I also didn’t get the quantity right because even though I listed energy cards separately, he disagrees that 50 trainer cards fall under the “Other common/uncommon cards”. Listing had around 60 rares and 16 holos from WOTC - expedition era and some were in NM condition. Can’t wait to see what he wants for a partial refund after paying $40 shipped.

I have no problem when I mess up a sale, but something like this is ridiculous. Played means played. Trainers are commons and uncommons. The way he worded his message makes me believe he does this quite often as well. Would love to let ebay handle it, but we all know I probably won’t win.

That really sucks man, I am actually thinking about doing Bulk Holo lots but stuff like this holds me back. I guess the only way to “get away” from any of these problems is insisting the entire lot is heavy played, though we all know if will gather less with that wording

“trainers are just as worthless as energies, you stated in the auction that there are 75 of these cards, which would be a bit on the high side but somewhat proportionate to the rest of the lot, you don’t show in your pictures that these cards would also be mixed in with commons/uncommons, i don’t have a problem with the condition of the 1st editions, but there are damaged cards among common/uncommon as well as holos/rares i can send you pictures if you like.
i am not going to dwell on this its taking my time and i am sure your too, you can do a partial refund of whatever you think is fair
thanks,”

Listing Description…

"As shown. Bulk lot of 500+ pokemon cards from base set - expedition (might be a few of the EX sets or even DP, but only a handful at most). 90% of the cards are english with a few other sprinkled in. Listing cards in played condition, but conditions vary. Breakdown includes…

75 basic Energy cards
51 1st edition common/uncommon
39 Rares (some 1st edition included)
15 Holos (few reverse)
330+ other Common/Uncommon cards"

Now I don’t sell bulk lots and create them, these are just leftover cards I had sitting around. Guess some people assume wording, hopefully a small partial will make him happy enough to not ruin my perfect account!

@joetehman I hear ya man. I just got roped into a new one too. This guy bought a complete set of cards and basically found 2 cards from the lot had what appears to be factory ink marks on them. I photographed all the holo cards front and back but lumped all the non-holos into one photo where you can’t see any marks. I offered to send out free replacements to the two card but he just ignores the offer and continues to push the return. He appears to buy and sell sets of cards frequently so not sure if he decided he can’t make enough money off the set he bought from me or what his deal is. I’m not a free shipping personal card rental source…

On a side note I tried to get a eBay definition of what is classified as “Doesn’t match description or photos” and that doesn’t seem to exist, go figure.

Yeah, I will just eat the cost, its negligible. Guess I need to be super descriptive from now on and list every card!

Small update to teh dramaz.

Now he posted some photos of another card with “ink marks” on it. He actually took a sharpie to one of the cards and marked it up to bolster his case for a return. Sadly he is doing it to an uncommon card in an area that can’t be seen in the original photo so not sure how I can prove that he is now committing fraud. I do have photos of all the cards in the set but was maxed out on photos in the listing… time to call ebay

True however… I bought 2 cards which were stated as brand new and they werent.Small damage to the back due to handling means they arent new. I want to keep the cards as I may not be able to get them again…however I dont want to be paying the full price as they arent new and cannot be graded with the chance for a 10.I suggested swapping them however the seller has not replied so i said replace or partial refund is prefered but can post back for full refund but they pay postage and import charges.

Still no responce so i have opened a F Y case with ebay due to them ignoring me(they sent a message after my 6 with a generic thanks for your purcahse leave us feedback? lollll…)

I was selling long booster packs for gym challenge. Now these packs are old and were not stored well, which was noted very clearly in the description. Yet when the buyer got the pack he was nit picky over cracks in it!?

Why do you buy packs… to open. So why is that an issue??? Unless he is collecting packs it should not matter and either way I stated they were NOT mint packs. Long story short I gave him a $2 partial refund to ensure good feedback and so he would leave me the hell alone. OY!

Vey!

A recent negative feedback of mine (times three items!) was due to the fact that the lady received the cards “slowly”. She literally left negative feedback 9 business days after payment. Right in my description it mentions that USPS retail ground can take up to 10 business days. Plus my handling time that is up to 3 business days. All these messages below were sent on business day 8 and feedback left on 9.

Buyer: “Hi there, I haven’t received the items purchased from you. I had 3 purchases total. I’d like an update on when this was shipped out?”

(note that I always mark items as shipped when I send them out which was within 3 business days of payment)

Me: “3 business days handling and up to 10 shipping. Please be patient late next week it should be there at the latest as it says all of this in the listing. Let me know.”

Buyer: “EBay says based on your settings the estimated delivery date was the 24th.”

Me: ““estimate” please read the listing I mention it right in the description that an estimate is not a guarantee.”

Buyer: “It’s fine I will keep my business elsewhere from here on out.”

Me: "From the listing.

“ALL United States orders over $10 ship for FREE with tracking. Orders under $10 ship via USPS retail ground and DO NOT have tracking. I ship within 3 business days after payment is received. Please contact me BEFORE buying if you have any questions. Once received, please let me know if there are any issues with your order as I will work to provide 5 star service to every buyer. Please note that eBay estimated delivery dates are just that, estimates. Retail ground can take up to 10 business days for delivery.”"

Buyer: “Thanks for copy and paste. Ground delivery from NY to VA don’t take that long. I was sent a ground delivery from California I received in 2 days. So your handling took longer than 3. I’m dissatisfied.”

Then the negative feedback was left and it devolved from there. eBay estimated delivery times are so frustrating, maybe I need to up my handling time to a week to compensate as I am frequently having people ask about where the item is since the estimated date is being passed. Hell maybe they are looking at the estimated date for first class shipping which is a $2.50 add on for all my listings, and comes included on any order over $10.

That’s just awful. You spell everything out clearly in the listing and still the goofball complains. Sometimes you just can win. I would try to get Ebay to remove it.

Against my better judgment I am probably going to call today. I almost know it will just be a waste of 20 minutes or so as I doubt they will remove it for whatever reason. I will update with how it goes. Luckily I am not a top rated seller anyways, otherwise this could seriously hurt me with the discount potentially on the line. Still having those 3 negatives surely can’t help with future sales.

All you need is to show your description, 10 days and 3 handling, and the date she left feedback.

You have the evidence to support your claim bud, i shouldnt see why ebay wont be on your side. Perhaps do it via live chat so you can link and paste the text and take your time debating your side.

Yes, I myself don’t like eBay "Guess"timates. Buyers take it WAY too seriously and it affects a seller very much if the buyer is in a hurry to get an item. I’ve had issues from International buyers who can’t wait two weeks (eBay noobie) to buyers “claiming” cards are fake (Though they have no evidence, mainly CoroCoro Glossies).

I have a 1 Day handling time but I’ll tell you, it is exhausting trying to be GREAT at customer service and having a 9-5 Job. I’ve only gotten 4 Negatives in a whole year span (1 which I sent a replacement and it never got to them, another where they mistaken the negative for positive, and 2 “claiming” that my Glossy cards are fake.) I just leave it at that, can’t be perfect I say. Knowledgeable buyers will look at the feedback and separate the wheat from the chaff.

So I called eBay about the 3 negatives as well as 2 recent neutral. Story on the 2 neutral was that 2 weeks after payment a different buyer left 2 neutrals stating “Seller took 2 weeks to mail out, however item was as described”. Mind you these were sub $10 singles again where I state 3 day handling and up to 10 business day shipping. 2 weeks (or about 11 business days) was within the delivery time, though eBay estimate was likely showing them a sooner date. I never got a message from them, just noticed the neutrals when I was looking at the recent negatives that I knew were coming.

So eBay not surprisingly wouldn’t do anything on the negatives. “They did not violate eBay policy and they left a review of their experience.” I asked them why eBay gives such an aggressive delivery estimate when the buyer chooses a shipping method that USPS itself states can take up to 10 business days. They didn’t have a good answer or suggestion to resolve that, but I am just going to further up all my handling times from 3 to 5 days I guess. Feedback that was left was: “Rude Seller, will not buy from again. Takes forever to receive items from.” Rude is an opinion, I guess some find it “rude” to be pointed out their ignorance. “Takes forever to receive items from” is just factually incorrect as the items were delivered a few days inside of the real window given, though delayed from eBay estimates.

Also wouldn’t do anything on the neutrals. Sigh. 15 minutes gone on the phone that I knew I was going to be wasting.

Fun stuff. Again I am just glad I am not top rated or this would really be killing me probably pushing me to the edge if not kicking me out of TRS requirements.
