E4's Favorite Wailmer & Wailord (Closed - Results)

Sometimes bulbapedia is no help. I’m going to see if there’s sealed ones on ebay

bulbapedia gives you the name to search on ebay. that’s the most they can do for you in this case lol

Yeah and it’s been a pain to locate the different Pikachu cards on there. I’ve had more success using quuador’s list then bulbapedia

There is one more unreleased Wailmer card.

Although tbh, I wouldn’t have voted for it art-wise. :upside_down_face: Typical Ken Sugimori artwork on generic background.

EDIT: Turned out to be a fake scan, made as a joke by someone back when Pokémon-e was still being released.

:astonished:

Was that one of the sakple cards from 2003 that was used for testing?

I don’t know any Sample cards from 2003, so if you know something I don’t I’d love to know. But I assume you meant 2001, for either the Japanese Press Conference of March 2001 or Nintendo Space World of August 2001? But tbh, I don’t think this Wailmer is from either.

Here are the three Sample cards from the Japanese Press Conference of March 2001:

Sample Pikachus (both type of borders)
Sample Eevees
Pichu Samples

If you compare it with the Wailmer above, these three are missing the ID below the artwork (at the bottom right) like released E-reader Pokémon TCG cards, which means these three are older than the Wailmer.

As for the Sample cards from the Nintendo Space World of August 2001:

WTDOAC7

Those all contain the word Sample in the bottom-right. Whereas the Wailmer has the promo logo and a promo number.

I also don’t see it among the cards here, which are a mixture of the Sample cards from the Nintendo Space World event, as well as some cards that did see a release eventually (mostly in the Pokémon VS set):

OwxvyQy

So the Wailmer is probably from a third unknown Sample set, and didn’t made the cut to be actually released in the end. Since it’s a promo, it’s also plausible it was originally intended to be released separately, but that promotion got cancelled in the end. I honestly don’t know, and apart from this single picture, I’ve never heard any information about it.

@Quuador i could be mistaken. I thought the wailmer was intended to be a release prior to gen 3 being released and was used as a demo or test for something. I feel like I’ve read it somewhere that the wailmer and a couple others were created for this reason or at least the artwork but it never made it to the public. Again, I’m probably wrong but I’m sure I have read/seen it somewhere. I believe it was somewhere around late 2002/2003. I’d have to go back and try to find it again.

Also I hope one day you’re able to get the 2 Pikachus and that pichu. It’s so unfortunate those artworks were never released.

@Quuador have you seen these test cards? There’s a good bit of them. Showcased by Michael Ryan. He was a senior editor for Pokemon in the 90s and up to 2000

Yep, I’ve seen that video of Leonhart. Those are indeed pretty cool as well. I should have the screenshots and the saved video somewhere on my PC.

It’s criminal that the pichu sample never made it to an official TCG card. I’m so jealous of whoever owns it

and @TortError404 and for the other enjoyers of the Arita Magikarp & Wailord GX, a nice lil Korean TV spot also revealed the artwork without text or borders (unfortunately not in as high of a resolution as I would have liked to see):
