DoByG's Scyther Identification Thread

Hi all! I go by DoByG, I collect Scythers. I have been working on my collection and the website that hosts it in parallel for a while now. Being close to a working version, I want to add some information on the last items I still don’t know enough about. As with other great threads that have helped me a bunch while identifying my finds, I am starting this thread to both ask the community for help and to help other Scyther collectors in the future.

For each item on my website, I am looking for:

  • release date (year)
  • the company that produced the item
  • set name/series number
  • photo of the front and back

The items in this thread will belong to 3 groups:

1. I have photos of the item, know some of the information, but miss some details (need additional info)
2. I have confirmed a Scyther was released in the series, but I have never seen a photo of (need a photo)
3. I have done my best to investigate the series, it looks like a Scyther may exist, but I can neither confirm nor deny that (need a yes/no)

1. Here are the items I have photos of, but miss some details:

* Red dot in the top right corner means the photo is not of the exact item, but that’s what the series looks like.

17 Items (6 Identified)

1.1. Meiji Lanticular Mini Card (Year? Series? Back Photo?)

1.2. Meiji Lanticular Zoom Up Scyther & Scizor (Year? Series? Back Photo?)

1.3. Meiji Metallic Sticker (Year? Series?)

1.4. 1997 Shogakukan Youchien Appendix Menko
Identification post by @sableguy

1.5. 2000 Shogakukan Youchien Appendix Menko
Identification post by @sableguy

1.6. 2006 Shogakukan Youchien Appendix Menko
Identification post by @sableguy

1.7. 2019 Pokemon Fan Playtime Appendix Menko
Identification post by @sableguy

1.8. Unknown Magazine Appendix Karuta Card (Producer? Year? Series?)

1.9. 2004 Pokemon Aim to Be a Pokémon Master Board Game
Identification post by @sableguy

1.10. Meiji Caramel Box Dice (Year? Series?)

  • other Scyther versions?

1.11. 2000 Pokemon Stadium 2 Coro Coro Sticker Sheet
Identification post by @sableguy

1.12. Kyodo Metal Collection Scyther in Silver (Year? Series?)
*Silver is not an official color for the initial series for Gen 1 (Scyther was part of Series 5). I think this figure is a later eddition, included in some gen 2 series, but not all gen 1 pokemon have a silver version and I can’t find it documented.

1.13. Bandai Keshi PVC Figure in Transparent Orange
*It has the exact same mold and TM possitioning like the known colors, but transparent colors were released mainly in the Box series, where each box had a specific Pokémon in it. Scyther was part of Box 2 (Transparent Dark Green) not from Box 7 (Transparent Orange). The only other documented transparent color released I have found for Scyther is the 1996 Bandai Keshi PVC Nagatanien Promo (Transparent Red). There are other instances of Transparent Orange / Transparent White color keshi figures found, so it must have been a special, later release somewhere.

1.14. Book Page Sticker Sheet (Year? Series?)

1.15. Pokemon Ranger Sticker Sheet (Year? Producer?)

1.16. Pokemon (Shogakukan?) Sticker Sheet (Year? Producer?)

1.17. Board Game Card (Year? Producer?)

2. Here are the items I have information on, and I know Scyther exists, but I need a photo of it:

7 Items

2.1. 1999 Pokemon Candy Planet Cards

2.2. 1998 Bandai Slide Up Card Part 3

2.3. 1996 Bandai Keshi Coro Coro Shop Exclusive (Metalic Green)

2.4. 1997 Kyodo Metal Collection 5 Figure (Copper)

2.5. 1998 Takara Metal Swing Keychain Series 5

2.6. 2003 Retsuden Pokemon Stamper

2.7. 1996 Banpresto Sticker Sheet (Series name?)

3. Lastly, here are the items from series, that may contain Scyther, but I was not able to confirm or deny this:

6 Items

3.1. English cards, white back.

3.2. Japanese Metal Pins, in pokeball-like capsules

3.3. Japanese Various Maru Menko Series

3.4. Japanese Lucky Chance Seal Series

3.5. Japanese Big Cards

3.6. Transparent Japanese Mini Cards

THIS IS MY WTB THREAD, in case you have some cool Scythers lying around and would like to help me. You can reach me in comments and DMs here, as well as on Instagram. Thanks in advance for your help! <3

Thanks for posting. I’ll take a look at the other items when I have time.

1.9 - 2004(?) TOMY - Aim to Be a Pokémon Master Game! Advanced Generation (めざせ! ポケモンマスターゲーム アドバンスジェネレーション)

Previously identified here: The Giant Pokémon non-TCG Identification Thread - #226 by sableguy

The year I’m not sure about, I guessed based off of the ANA advertisement located in a box.

Welcome. Most of the items in the details sections are identified somewhere on this forum, for example 1.3 there has to be photos of the box somewhere in th forum. For most appendix stuff try to find images of them in they original inserts and use google translate photos. Here are some, hope they help:

And for 2.1 you could try asking this collector, seems to have a lot:

Also, just to let you know there is an ultra-rare version of these cards in french, being the canadian version. Very very rare to be honest:

For the sake of completeness/future reference, I also found the origin of these medals below, though you don’t have it listed (and I do not know if there is a Scyther in this set):

(Edit: a picture of the entire set shows that there is a Scyther in this set, if you didn’t already know)

The year and month can be seen on the back here:

Thanks for the help! I messaged the guy on Instagram, no response but I will wait a bit. And knowing that there is a different language variation is so cool (even tho I doubt I will ever find my Canadian Scyther lol). Thanks again!

Oh boy, I have only heard about your magic powers, but this is something else! Thank you so much! I will now go and add the missing information to my website, as well as to the OP. Also, I knew about the third series of minicards, but for those I somehow found the info, so I skipped it in my identification list. Thanks anyway for adding more data on them too.

Now, the things I am mostly looking to find more info about are the Metal and Keshi figures (those specific colors) and the 3 Meiji items (I have seen those series alot, not sure why I cant find more info on them). The whole community is helping a bunch, thanks!

Edit: I have also added 4 more items to the Identification pile.

1.15 2006 (April 21) Pokemon Ranger Class Up Sticker (Shogakukan)

The inside matches your sticker sheet.

This Amazon link states that it was released on April 21, 2006: Amazon.co.jp: ポケモンレンジャー クラスアップステッカー (まるごとシ-ルブック) : ポケモン: Japanese Books

1.16 2004 Pokémon Complete Character Encyclopedia Part 1

It is faint, but you can see the bottom match your sticker sheet.

When I try to update the OP, I get a post length error now (even tho I was succesfull in updating it 2 days ago), But @sableguy has correctly identified:

1.14 American Greetings Corporation - 1999 StickerTime Fun & Games No. 38 (Pokemon)
1.15 2006 (April 21) Pokemon Ranger Class Up Sticker (Shogakukan)
1.16 2004 Pokémon Complete Character Encyclopedia Part 1

We are now at 9/17 Identified items! Thanks!

For 1.15 and 1.16, here is the publishing information page. I’m working on a resource for these sticker books, but it probably won’t be ready for some time. The Amazon information date is a bit off, and the number of pages should be 20+, so the Amazon information may not be fully reliable.

1.15

Publishing date: May 20th, 2006

1.16

Publishing date: July 20th, 2004

Let me know if you’d like any more information from one of these sticker books, and I’ll see if I have it :slightly_smiling_face: Also if you want to know if there are any more Scyther cameos that you’re not aware of.

Thanks for the update! Yes please, any Scyther I may have missed would help me. Here is what I have from those series:

I’ll dig through some of my things and check!

I’m scanning all the individual pages for these books for the resource I’m alluding to (mostly as a resource for species collectors), but there are some books that need scanning still (and probably many that I’m still missing), so I can update you more as things progress. I think I already know of a few Scyther cameos that are missing though.

I have the books for four of the stickers here. I can confirm the publishing information for the HeartGold and Diamond Pearl ones too, if you want. I don’t have the FireRed book yet.

Here are some, with the sheets and publication date. These are all printed by Shogakukan. I’m fairly sure there are some more, as I still have a number of books I haven’t scanned through yet, and some of my books were incomplete. But this is exactly why I want to make a good resource for these books, to help out other species collectors :slightly_smiling_face:

Pardon the dull colors on some pictures. Those are scans and my scanner is not great, so they need post-processing to bring the colors closer to the true colors.

Hope this helps!

From that Pokemon Rangers book. This isn’t a sticker sheet, but these sticker books all have non-sticker sheets in the last few sheet where you’re supposed to place stickers (i.e. I think you’re supposed to put pokeball stickers on these if you’ve caught them or whatever).

For the HeartGold sheet you have above, the book also has a sprite non-sticker sheet. And the HeartGold book has a SoulSilver equivalents for the two pages.

SoulSilver sticker book publishing date = Oct. 6th, 2009

HeartGold sticker book has the same publishing date for the 1st printing.

Same deal for this Platinum book. 1st publishing date = Oct. 20th, 2008

The FireRed book also has one of those sprite sheets (I have the LeafGreen book and it has it).

Another Diamond/Pearl book with one sheet.

Publishing date = April 6th, 2009

Then we have various “Pokemon Sticker” books that cover Kanto + Johto pokemon.

Pokemon Stickers 1 = 1st publishing is Mar. 10th, 2000

Pokemon Stickers 2 = 1st publishing is Aug. 1st, 2000

Pokemon Stickers 3 = 1st publishing is Sep. 1st, 2001

(I am missing some pages from this one, if I remember right, so there might be more cameos from this sticker book)

Lastly, a bonus: a postcard with Scyther cameo. I know this postcard came from one of those postcard books. I should have a picture of the book cover but don’t want to trawl through my pictures to try to find it right now  Don’t know about the publishing date.
