Hi guys,in recent days both Rudy from alpha investments and mason from Card N all made video about how prices are going down for the new set(sets?),scalpes are starting to get burned and the market might be reversing.Personally I think it’s way to early to say something like this, but what is your opinion?
Scalpers buy first and think later. They don’t stop to check if a set will be popular.
I haven’t seen prices drop for older cards
of course in a reverse trend older cards will drop later on and to a lesser extent than etb’s of the current scalped set
Fucking hope not, I have bags to drop.
Watched the video, his thesis is that prices are lowering on the last three unpopular sets, but there’s no way to know if this is indicative of a larger trend for modern sealed
We are still very much boomin
Maybe modern sealed?
Lots of Pitch Black still in stock around in the UK, which is a change from the norm ![]()
In-print sets consistently selling for over MSRP has always been an anomaly. Not surprising to see things calming down, especially on sets that are not headlined by Charizard, Gengar, and Pikachu (shocker). Are the mythical “scalpers” even buying Perfect Order, Chaos Rising, Pitch Black to begin with?
I don’t think this completely foreseeable event signals anything larger for the market, other than the hopeful availability of more product at lower prices. Things may slow down at the same time, but I doubt the two are causally linked.
Too much market noise to know reliably. I think you have this bag of facts right now:
- Summer slump has always been powerful.
- The entire world is holding its breath for 30th
- The market is easily chewing through all of the reprints for sets like Ascended and Prismatic
- The last 6 months has felt very skippable and generated less enthusiasm than the incredibly strong 2025 lineup
- The holiday shopping season kicks in in 60 days
As a snapshot vibe, it would be really easy to say that we are coming off 6 months of yawning, prices on select modern cards are declining, and the base-level accessibility for a booster pack (set-agnostic) has increased while prices have decreased.
I think a more nuanced take might be that people are smart and they know what they are buying. Hype matters and every layer of the hobby is piling cash in anticipation of 30th opportunities. The only opportunities that have felt worth breaking rank on the 30th wait have been high-value, .5-set reprints.
I think by February 1st, 2027 we will have a really strong read on where the market is overall assuming no large-scale shifts make it obvious sooner. If the market comfortably chews through 30th product releases, Prismatic, Ascended, and Black/White are still keeping strong premiums as reprints roll, and the holiday season thins the herd on generic pack availability, the groundhog will not have seen its shadow.
Did we expect ascended heroes prices for sets that are mid at best
I think half the modern speculation is not knowing what unfolds in the highly anticipated Mega Rayquaza set and 30th. All of 30th Celebration’s chase cards has been revealed or leaked, and in 10 days we’re likely to discover that Storm Emeralda (to be Delta Reign this November) isn’t much different from other main expansions of this year
Storm emeralds finna be peak mark my words (also where are the leaks)
I remember people saying the modern bubble burst last year, then vintage spiked, and spiked further this year. Hopefully we are getting a return to normalcy for in print modern sets. However, I don’t know how much is noise, or if whats real correlates to the entire market.
A truck can reverse to do two things, pick up or dump.
I will say, graded cards 2-3 tiers away from the crème de la creme seem to be softening up. Been watching some cards I’m interested in end below last sold, sometimes below the last 2 or 3 sold - though still more than I’d wanna spend.
Seeing this with English 9s, niche and set card Japanese 10s.
I’m also getting less bites on my eBay inventory, which first the above categories. Good cards, but not the best of the best and not cards that had a ton of interest prior to this years spike
Love birds (tag team Latias/Latios) went from 10k to 20k, and is now back at 15k. It’s cooling off
I have no idea if it is, but I hope so. I have cards to buy and I’m waiting for that market crash discount ![]()
Market price is reversing yes but the liquidity is still there so we are still in a bull market
Not really a discount if it meant to be that price while in print from the beginning.
As for the market in general, summer slow down is a thing. It’s expected that more people are offline during the 2nd financial quarter, but that doesn’t mean everything drops in value. Artificial inflation of the price dropping doesn’t mean that the value of the sets isn’t consistent. Just that people are not buying into the manufactured hype around something that can be restocked and is in print. Pokemon can act as an investment vehicle as most of us know on here, but to quick flip for double or more it’s suggested retail price for sets that are in print was never sustainable long term. TPC can snip that in the but whenever they so desire.
I don’t see anything that’s sealed and out of print retracing? Are we actually panicking because sets that have been out for a month or so are not 2-3x and climbing?
