Do you think the market trend is about to reverse?

Every vintage card is at ath

Plenty of non-modern cards were hyped and saw a subsequent drop but that’s nothing new for high pop cards that get into 5 figures

Not referring to modern, which will always be available.

Validate my patience, market. I’ve been filling the edges of my collection for so long.

Every 'tuber thinks so. I can’t click on a hype video if I wanted to now…

Nip it in the bud

So, it feels to me like we’re still riding a little tide at the game corner. There’s still a sentiment of indulgence and pseudo-gambling. I’m even hearing this from some of my high-schoolers “It’s the only way to get ahead.” They’re speaking from decades of experience, after all. :winking_face_with_tongue:

Buyers are still pushing some prices up, but the tide is not changing IMO. I don’t know if, when that tide changes, will they decided to sell stuff, and we’ll see prices dropping as a whole? I don’t think it’s going to happen just yet. IMO, there’s also a big element of “known variable” that pokemon offers, which is absent in other forms of speculation, as well as the world right now.

Pratte has talked about Where is the new stock going to come from? I think that new product will have to come from over-extended people trying to re-position their interests. We’re not there yet. Optimism and attrition has yet to wear on speculators.

nothing calms the market more than 2-4 sets into a new generation of the tcg. Gen 10 will see a ton of dropoff. Until then, we are still boomin

All Rudy said was that we are in a slowdown when it comes to modern.

Pokémon has figured out what to do to keep people hooked. Expect them to keep doing so. This, by the way, is also what Rudy says.

Modern has slowed down, yes. I think there is some anticipatory saving for the 30th anniversary and Rayquaza themed sets coming. High-end vintage is continuing to set new records. Typical K-shaped trajectory.

Does K shape ever recover in any way?

You meant to say does the leg down ever recover and rejoin the leg up? The answer is simply, no not in short term, it is a K shape, leg up leg down. If that happened it would no longer be a K. It would be a convergence, catch up. This is where modern and its prices cause a headache for me personally. I have to justify WHY it would converge again after a large drop off. Besides the usual I would have to hope for a hype cycle PART III.

Yeah! Or does the K ever recover to a - or something similar. I understand that if it doesn’t look like a K then it’s no longer a K shape lol

Meaning the bottom of the K would be hyped up to be more like a / or at least closer to the middle of the shape?

Yes, in which case correct no longer a K.

So if we truly enter a strong K, which is looking possible for modern and some vintage I would expect that leg down to stay a while. With exceptions like the last few sets move sideways to down but 30th and rayquaza set do very well. What the catalyst is to another modern boom where random IR’s take off with high 10 pops, that I do not know outside fomo.

People realize the good cards are undervalued so they spike. Then everyone thinks everything must be equally undervalued so everything spikes - but that isn’t really true.

The mediocre stuff starts to soften up and people realize they’re getting burned a bit so everything starts to soften up. Only the good stuff suffers a lot less because it has better fundamentals and the people who bought them know what they have so fewer will dump them for 10-20% lower.

If you’re asking if the mediocre stuff that you bought at ATH will rebound quickly after it starts to soften, no probably not. If you bought it bc you liked it then you should be good to hang onto it long term and maybe another hype cycle will come around.
