discussion on football (soccer)

I think the Gary Lineker quote sums it best, “Football is a simple game. Twenty-two men chase a ball for 90 minutes and at the end, the Germans always win.”

  1. I HATE Brazil. They deserved every ounce of whooping from Germany. Their skill was inflated and after having barely won every singly match of this cup, they finally got put in their place by a true world class team.

  2. Germany should NOT have won the final. Argentina played a better game, but just couldn’t finish. Higuain screwed up big time, and I do fault Messi for not living up to his potential and using his right foot like I know he can to have scored on his attempt (not the free kick).

  3. I am very proud of Team USA this year. Although we kinda unjustly lost to Belgium, we made an AMAZING run this year and proved everyone wrong by getting out of the group stage in true American fashion (we won by losing haha).

  4. We most likely will never see a World Cup like this again. The entertainment value of this cup was something never before seen. I strongly believe this cup gave soccer a much better name across the world and (most importantly) in America. The skill, pace, and overall quality of the games this cup were unmatched. Hopefully next cup can get close to this one.

  5. This cup made me realize that my new favorite team is France. I was a Spain fan since the last World Cup, and will continue to watch them to see how they rebuild in the wake of their team being too old to play anymore, but the majority of my love has switched to France (with exception to my eternal dedication to the USA team first of course).

  6. The goalies this cup were spectacular! Navas, Neuer, Howard, Ochoa, Courtois, Enyeama, Julio Ceasar, Sergio Romero, and of course, the lunatic Tim Krul. So much talent throughout the tournament. I think the thing that stood out most to me, that I believe we will start seeing much more of, is the goalkeeper coming out of the box and turning into a defender. Neuer was the king of this during the cup. In one game, he came out of the box 18 times! Of course, Neuer has an amazing mind for soccer, so anyone trying to imitate him will probably mess up a few times, but this strategy is definitely something that goalies will need to have in the upcoming years.

  7. Messi didn’t deserve the Golden Boot. He is good enough to have earned it, but he was tripled teamed the whole tournament and definitely didn’t earn it.

  8. CAN WE PLEASE TALK ABOUT JAMES RODRIGUEZ?!?! Oh man, what a guy. I can’t wait to see more of him. He’s such a skillful player, and he’s a nice guy too! Soccer players should look up to him.

  1. Suarez to Barca?!?!?! Ugh.

  2. Courtois back to Chelsea?! WHY!!! GO BACK TO ATHLETICO PLEASE!!! I BEG YOU!!!

  3. Chelsea. Ugh.

  4. Did anyone hear about the MLS player that got a yellow card for taking a selfie as a goal celebration? So American.

I’m a much bigger World Cup fan than I am a league soccer fan

  1. I agree. FIFA rigged their games to get them to keep advancing cause they don’t want the host nation to lose in the group stage.

  2. Germany is the better team, but Argentina does have better offensive players. The problem with Argentina is that they are a team with great individual players that have a poor sense of team play. They have a very poor sense of team play. If you watched them, Messi would set up amazing crosses or through passes to no one, cause they just weren’t on the same page. Also, Argentina came into the come with a defensive problem, but I’m proud of them for fixing that - every game of the cup they improved. I do agree that Germany played under their potential for the final and most of the tournament.
As for Latin American teams playing dirty, I agree with you for every single team except Colombia and Argentina. Argentina didn’t do any dirty moves, but they did dive a bit too much. Colombia though, now that’s an honest team.

  3. Unless you plan on living a short life, I disagree. MLS will take a VERY long time to reach the level of leagues in other countries or the other major sports here in the US, but I do believe that support for the US soccer team will match and exceed many other nations in my lifetime.

  4. Yeah, I think it’s stupid that it is going to Russia. Bring it to Canada.

I didn’t know you were a soccer fan @daelum. I agree with everything you said. I think most soccer players have the same general opinion/analysis. I think the reason Messi received the award is because he carried that team. If he were not there, they would of barely made it out of the group stages. Although, I may be a bit partial as Messi and I share the exact same birthday, month, day, year.

But Rodriguez really put on a show. I think if they would of defeated Brasil he would of been the Gold ball winner. At least seriously considered. He reminded me of Diego Forlan from 2010. I wouldn’t go as far and say he was like Zidane in 2006, because that is a one in a lifetime player. Again, a bit biased as he is my favorite player, and his birthday is a day before mine.

Canada could handle it. You only need one month. Slightly chilly is better than blistering heat. Qatar somehow got the bid with their insane average high of 120°F. Even Charizard would be like, nah, I can’t handle this, just put me back in the pokeball.

@bagoly14 - I feel you on the whole concept of America never letting the rest of the world forget that we won. It’s true, we wouldn’t hahaha.

@smpratte - I agree with the idea that Messi carried his team. He had some part, whether it was scoring or assisting, every goal (except possibly 1?) that Argentina scored.
On a side note, I think it is absolutely ridiculous that Qatar got the 2022 bid. Do they even have a team? And their country’s weather is awful for anything physical. And also their government is feces. You heard about the workers abuse scandals right? Just down right ridiculous. There are plenty of other countries that deserve the bid way more than Qatar.

Woah, that’s crazy. Knowing FIFA is corrupt, adding oil to the mix makes things a lot more interesting. Good observation!

And rest assured it’s not baby oil that’s involved here. Not the Johnson’s & Johnson’s kind but slick nonetheless.

Yep, plenty of other countries that deserve to host the WC like Ostralya.

It all boils down on who can pay the most grease money. Bloody FIFA.

For everyone who hasn’t seen it yet.

I was on the verge of crying while watching that video… until the very end, then I got pissed.

That is true. I like the whole fantastical idea that this is a world game and ever country should be able to represent it. Realistically, only certain countries have the proper infrastructure to support the tournament. It is not a big deal when they held it in the states, or european countries who have professional leagues to use existing stadiums or new ones after their construction. The problem are the countries that spend an absurd amount on stadiums and then they are used for nothing after the tournament.

Also, Brasil had a tone of criticism leading into the world cup in regards to their spending. Which will be compounded by the fact that they are supported to host the olympics in 2 years.

Oh and I heard rumors that Qatar was considering building a floating air conditioning cloud to remedy their desert temperatures.

lol it just hit sports news the other day in the uk that Uruguay will host it before we are even considered
