I am sure some of you have seen the “Demon Slayer” season 1 series on Netflix. The follow-up movie, Mugen Train, has broken all box office records in Japan for any movie, and is well on its way to break the $1BN mark - not bad for a Japanese movie with subtitles released around the globe. This series can go on for many years … I think this may be the next big thing in collectibles.
I have thoroughly enjoyed watching the series with my son, and we look forward to seeing the movie when it is on Amazon Prime. Great story line with awesome character development.
Carddass has a booster box with sealed packs on Demon Slayer characters. I picked up a few sealed boxes and will plan to hold them for the long haul.
Wondering if anybody else sees potential here for the long term … the cards are plastic with stain glass for rares and quite stunning! I suppose this would the equivalent of 1st Ed Base Set for the Demon Slayer series …
I can really see it going both “extremes”, for example, I’m a big Monster Hunter fan and at least since World & Iceborne, it has become a global franchise with lots of fans. Still, most MH fans probably don’t even know of the existence of the (retired) TCG, the anniversary cards, the lenticular cards, the “chibi” cards, maybe even the collectible figures, although those do see some collector interest in the west now. That franchise is literally perfect for collecting, since there are hundreds of species & sub species of monsters and the games are really about “hunting them all” and maybe collecting all the armor sets & weapons. Yet, nearly nobody collects the collectibles apart from statues & figures.
I guess my point is, these dynamics are really hard to predict since even a popular franchise, perfect for collectibles, doesn’t have to have any collector’s interest necessarily, especially when it comes to paying premium above retail.
Of the thousands of TCGs that are made, only an extremely tiny fraction ever stand the test of time.
It doesn’t matter how popular the IP is. I just checked the list of movies that made over 1B and none of them have a notable tcg associated with them.
I’ve seen Demon Slayer and while it’s a good show, I personally dont think it’s the foundation of a good ccg. Feel free to break boxes and have fun with it but I wouldn’t treat it as anything more than an extremely speculative investment
It is indeed pure speculation and a small scale one - 3 boxes/$200. I will seal away the boxes and see where and if they go anywhere in another 5-10 years. Thank you all for commenting.
Good show, fun little idea of doing a tcg while it’s popular and during the movie release. As others said, I don’t really see it taking off as a popular tcg let alone a sound “investment”. My two cents
Surprised to see Demon Slayer booster boxes to be fair. I guess there was Naruto and such, would have liked to have collected some of them, cards that is. Whereabouts did you get your booster boxes @dragonroll ? Cheers
