No offense, but China lied about the actual death and infected numbers. Perhaps it might have been taken seriously much sooner had things been different
Yeah the early stages could have been handled better. I’m not justifying it but I understand why they did it the way they did. Kept it quiet, avoided mass panic in a heavily populated and vast country, came up with a plan and rolled it out across the entire country. The response once the seriousness of the situation was realised was pretty damn imlressive. Yes, ‘draconian’ measures were enforced, but it’s the textbook answer to a virus this prolific and far-reaching. Quite handy to have a population who listen to and respect their government (not that there’s much of a choice!) at a time where heavy handed sanctions need to be imposed. For better or worse. Hard to compare two systems, as they are very different entities.
I’d rather be here than in the West right now. Absolute shit show. Governments saw what was happening here since January. It is now nearly April and only now are businesses being locked down.
I don’t kiss any government’s ass, far from it, but I do respect how this was handled. It just might also be worth noting that Western countries watched for months, yet didn’t take action until it was already on their doorstep. Look how the population is behaving now. Everyone is focused on ‘me’ rather than ‘we’. An outer veneer has been stripped away and people are revealing their true colours, positive and negative.
This is my home. I have lived here for ten years. I have tremendous respect for the people of this country. I have many issues with other elements of life here…I mean, the virus came from here due to the government’s lack of sanitation and effective measures being in place to control the dirty wet markets…should have learned from 2003. But, it is what it is now. It’s out there’s and there’s little point in a slanging match about who did what - it’s how it is dealt with going forward.
We also need to focus on what we as individuals can control. What we say, what we do, how we behave. Stay inside, stay safe, respect the elderly and immunocompromised. This isn’t about me or you, it’s about everyone. Hopefully this bizarre and awful situation has the power to bring people together (banned as it is!).
While I concede they seem to have reacted the most responsibly to the pandemic, all in/outbound flights should have been stopped immediately before the damage was done.
The WHO are also culpable as disinformants who did next to nothing in the way of preventative measures.
Silencing and arresting
whistleblowers, who tried to warn the public of Covid-19 up to 3-4 months earlier is not exactly exemplary behaviour, though I respect your opinion.
I see that the Chinese propaganda has gone to your head…
Even if by some miracle the Chinese are telling the truth with the numbers dead and infected (you must be very naive to trust the CCP), the only way they’ve put a stranglehold on the virus is by taking measures such as literally welding people into their apartments, forcing people into weird metal box contraptions and christ knows what else, a quick search online will send you down a very dark rabbit hole. On top of that the Chinese barbarity towards animals and their godawful wet markets are the origin of most of the modern day diseases that we’ve seen in the past 20 years, so yes the West’s response has been poor but let’s not pretend that China is somehow not to blame for this mess - maybe they should come up with a plan to stop this happening in the first place and to also stop “silencing” doctors and people who dare speak up.
@guangjoe , I appreciate your take on the situation. You fairly and accurately point out the strengths and the flaws that exist with both nations’ handling of Covid-19. I do sincerely hope that the Chinese government implements strict new sanitation reforms and outlaws wet markets moving forward. If not, I imagine there will be significant pressure from the rest of the globe. In fact, it seems inevitable that much of the world will focus the blame for all the deaths and economic destruction on China once we make it out of this. I certainly don’t think that’s fair or productive, but it is a human tendency to assign blame in the aftermath of loss. Like you said though, hopefully this situation brings people closer together. Stay safe out there!
The virus started in China due to their own negligence. It started as far back as November, and they didn’t take any measures to tackle it until late January despite being fully aware of what was going on. Sure they really cracked down on it hard then…but they let it spread throughout their country, and more egregiously, to the rest of the world–they could have stopped this spread, but they didn’t. The World Health Organization is also in the pocket of the Chinese and promoted Chinese propaganda to undermine the spread and impact of the virus (such as suggesting that it cannot spread through the air) and emphasizing that its more important to not be racially discriminatory against Chinese people than it was to slow the spread of the virus. They also silenced and likely executed many of their own informed citizens who tried to warn the Chinese people and the rest of the world about the dangers of the disease. China is a heinous state that will do anything to protect its industrial dominance over the world.
China’s negligence and desire to save face and protect their economy has killed thousands upon thousands (10,000+ if we’re talking real numbers) of people worldwide, and has caused an international recession, causing millions of people to lose their jobs. Society has shut down and will continue to be shut down for months; it will take years for the world to fully recover from this, and even then, we of course cannot make up for all the lives lost. This is all thanks to the Chinese government’s malfeasance. There’s a good reason why nearly every major outbreak over the past two millennia–including the Black Plague, Small Pox, and the Spanish Flu (yes, you heard that correctly)–has come from China. The world needs to shut down its exposure to China–they offer no benefit to the world’s denizens except for corporate millionaires and billionaires trying to save a few bucks on labor. Regular people have lost their jobs, had their wages shrunk, have their culture institutions sell out to China and become exposed to their propaganda, and have had our economies crashed and countless people killed from their diseases. China is an evil entity that worsens the world, and every nation–if they actually cared about their own people and not just the greedy corporate sellouts–should isolate itself from China’s malevolence. I will never forgive China for all that have they done to plague the world.
Alright, let’s end the discussion here about government culpability (whether it’s China, the west, or elsewhere) or lack thereof. The virus is everywhere and now we all have to deal with it. We’re getting away from the intention of this thread which is to provide information, not to argue with our fellow collectors and get political. We’re also straying dangerously close to racism in several directions which will not be tolerated.
Thank you very much for assuring us that E4 is an inclusive and respectful community! As someone who was born and raised in China, it’s very painful to read through some of the recent posts in this thread. E4 is my most cherished community on the internet, where I can make friends who share a same hobby, same childhood nostalgia, and same passion, no matter where they’re in the world. There’s already too much hate everywhere, I really hope E4 could remain a sanctuary for all who loves Pokemon:)
