Covid-19/Corona Virus Megathread (Info/Discussion)

  1. I said stockpile for your family, not hoard. You should have enough to not need to go out for several weeks.

  2. No one in nyc has space to grow food unless you are in an outer area or extremely rich. That sounds nice in theory but I live in a 50 floor apartment building. It’s not a reality.

  3. There is going to be scarcity. You can ignore this or not.

Meanwhile, it’s only 28 degrees her in Minnesota. Some spring weather would make this a little more tolerable . . .

Another thing to add for people who may be viewing my comments from the perspective of someone with yard space or space in general. There are plenty of buildings in nyc with thousands of residents and only a few elevators. Including mine. I’ve never been the only person in the elevator the entire time I’ve lived here. And this isn’t a case of oh you can just take the stairs… If you are disabled or cannot walk 10 20 30+ floors the elevator is unavoidable

A packed elevator is jackpot for a virus. It’s safer to not rely on using one. On top of this, light is a luxury here. I do not have the natural light in my apartment to grow anything. Depending on where in the city you are this is not at all unusual.

Please just keep in mind that your living situation may not be the same as others.

Sometimes things aren’t the way they appear brother;)

Here’s what happened to me.

Well I finally lost it!!!
Was just in Walgreens and saw a guy whose cart was FULL to the brim with hand sanitizers, baby wipes, soaps, everything that people need!!
I called him selfish and gave him a low down about the elderly, moms, and people who need these types of things. I told him he should be ashamed of himself!
He said: “Sorry but are you done? Cause I really need to get back to restocking the shelves!!”

I lol’d.

Guys I’m not suggesting to be that guy who bought 17,000 bottles of hand sanitizer. I got 5 4oz bottles two weeks ago so my parents and siblings could each have one and those will last a month. That’s what I mean by stockpile and to buy this stuff now. Cause you can’t find it on shelves or online anymore.

I suggested growing your own food “if you have the means.”

You suggested stockpiling while noting that you can just use whatever you stockpile for months or years if needed; that’s the same as hoarding.

I was careless in my words in my original comment and it wasn’t meant to be a direct criticism of you or your situation, my intention was to argue against the idea of panic buying months or years worth of supplies. That is what some people are actually doing and it’s creating scarcity that otherwise wouldn’t exist. Like with TP, which isn’t going to run out…

And it’s this bs that’s maddening:

No worries. I see where the miscommunication was. By “months or years” I meant it’s not like the stuff you are buying is going to go bad quickly (hand sanitizer, dried and canned food etc) so you can use it whenever if you don’t end up needing it during the virus peak. Not that you need literal years worth of supplies haha.

It seems like the West is finally waking up from its sense of Anglo-exceptionalism, immune to the happenings in the rest of the world. There is still much skepticism in the community about the seriousness about this, people just living their normal lives. The US, UK and Australian governments and leadership have had piss poor responses to this crisis from the start and have been two steps behind rather than one in front at every point in the crisis. Now here in Victoria, Aus we are getting a lockdown in 48 hours. The federal government is still refusing to shut schools and it has now gotten to the point where the state governments are taking control and will shut them.

Some quick numbers from Finland from yesterday.
Total number of laboratory tests made: 7300Total number of confirmed corona infections: 521Total number of deaths: 1 ( elder person )
Vast majority of these cases happen in Helsinki and other large cities in metropolitan area, government has already flashed an option where this part would be separated from rest of the country. Not so surprisingly some people are already going somewhere else, even as we speak I’m reading news about rush hour happening at roads headed to north. Imo. this is really stupid move even if people had their own holiday home etc. there, ski resorts are already shutting down and restaurants/bars have requested official shutdown as well.

Lol. If you understood Western philosophy then you wouldn’t make such misinformed statements.

It’s been a crazy couple weeks and I haven’t been on the forums lately, with everything going on. I hope all members/collectors here in the community are staying healthy and positive. One of the things I love about the hobby, is that it is always here when you need it! The next couple weeks are going to be a good time for me to add to the collection and set some new goals! There is always a bright side if you look for it . Hope all is well!

It wasn’t just the west that responded poorly to this, please refer to China and Iran as examples.

As if the Western world is actually “Anglo” in any sense anymore. The demographics have completely changed, and those in power serve the new demographics and other nations–not the old, ancestral population.

Grandma has been in the hospital for a few days and her COVID-19 test just came back–positive. She seems to be relatively stable, but needs oxygen and is medicated-up and a bit loopy. We’re concerned. Just gotta do all that we can–be smart, and pray.

Thank you, @trainerdlyellow, @garyis2000, and @pokeolivr. Gary–I don’t like revealing much about my personal life on the Internet, but her name is “Iz”.

She got the virus while on a cruise. We tried to tell her not to go, but she insisted. Wished we had said more, and this instance has taught me a valuable lesson, something that I was a bit iffy on before but have now fully embraced: If someone you love and deeply care about is doing something that you strongly believe will be harmful to their well-being, don’t let them do it. Do everything in your power to protect your loved ones if you have strong reason to believe that you are helping them avoid or overcome harm. Their protests and anger they throw back at you are worth it if it means securing their well-being.

Our pastor will use Iz but I’m sure the good Lord will know who he’s talking about;)

I will tell you that you couldn’t stopped her. You voice your opinion, but in the end they make their own choices. As someone who 10 years later still finds himself at some fault his dad passing (over all health problems)…the what if road only leads to guilt and hate.
Prayers
