Covid-19/Corona Virus Megathread (Info/Discussion)

Hi everyone, I wanted to share with you a website that my friend is working on: covidtracking.com/

The data of this site comes directly from the state/district/territory public health authorities. This is also an open-source project on Github (GitHub - COVID19Tracking/website: The COVID Tracking Project website), so if you have the skills and would like to help, definitely reach out to them.

I just lost my side hustle job at the children’s hospital. We were asked to volunteer as childcare providers for essential healthcare providers. It’s really starting to get bad here in the Bay Area.

Damn this week most people getting laid off.

We will be seeing lot of people selling their personal stuff next week.

That’s rough, I really hope everything stabilizes in the Bay Area and things dont get worse then they are now. I live outside Philadelphia and we just had to suspend operations for our families construction company because of the order from the governor’s office.

I really hope everyone in the USA reads the comments from people in CA/WA/NYC right now. NYC is now closed to non-essential services, no one feel comfortable in public transport, and grocery stores are cleared out. That includes Amazon and online shipping, it’s either delayed, not shipping or not in stock. Please do the smart thing for you and your family and stockpile on essentials now if you can. You can always use supplies months or years from now. Better to look stupid and be safe.

Our hospitals are already starting to get overburdened. There are 4,000 confirmed cases in NYC. Experts estimate for every person tested, 5-10 people are asymptomatic still or have symptoms but have not been tested. So easily 20,000 - 40,000 in NYC.

This is really a sad time for the world. Disease has weakened and even killed our fellow man, perhaps for some even family. Our economies have crashed, and many folks have been left jobless, many with little means to sustain their families. In times like these, we must all come together and support one another in whatever ways we can, be generous and kind, be merciful. Although you are just one person, your individual actions will influence others to act in accordance. Pray for people. We will make it through this tough time, and hopefully we emerge as stronger people with more love for one another and a greater gratitude for the gift of life.

Apparently even the workers consider Gamestop non-essential, big thumbs up for using common sense.

Was told by the head of emergency department at a hospital in sydney that they dont expect the peak for another 2 months.

What happens if your contract is just running out? I guess it doesn’t count as they are paying the money to companies to keep people on that were on permanent contracts?

People don’t care, I tried buying groceries online for me and my mother and there are ZERO slots available for the next 20 days.

It’s crazy I’ve recently been told that I’m having to take unpaid leave in my current job so I’m going to go help the supermarket I used to be a manager at as its manic in stores they cant keep stuff in the shelf

From a dude who is now over 2 months of stuck at home…here’s my unrequested advice for if you get stuck inside for prolonged period of time. Being stuck here in China as it all started to happen was incredibly stressful. I doubted my decision to stay every other day, where colleagues left, uncertainties rose, etc etc. Anyway. Hope this is useful. May not apply in the same way at all (we weren’t allowed out at all at one point) but here goes.

  1. Exercise. Even if you didn’t do much before, you were still walking about. Being stuck at home drops your step count quite dramatically. Exercise releases endorphins. You will sleep better too.

  2. Do not engage in social media / news that clearly has an agenda of fear mongering and panic. This applies particularly to late at night, where if you are anything like me, you worry and get stuck inside your own head.

  3. Keep a schedule. Get up for work. Get dressed (seems silly, but changes everything). Go to bed on time as if you were going to work in the morning.

  4. Read. Great opportunity to get stuck into books. Books cannot be interrupted with pop ups of latest scary figures and alerts.

  5. Wash your hands.

  6. If you have children - they will pick up on tension, even unspoken. Chill out.

  7. If you live with a partner, give each other space. Make an agreement about this before it becomes an argument later on. As much as you love your partner, it is going to be intense spending every minute together in a relatively small space.

  8. If you can go out and it is safe to do so - go out. Get some nature. Feel the sunshine. It sounds silly, but it did me wonders just going to the forest for a day out after two months of being stuck at home.

  9. Focus on the positives. You now have time to finish that project, to study that thing, to finish that game.

  10. Stay informed but also know this: this too, shall pass.

This type of thinking is exactly the problem.

Stop hoarding. Supplies are not running out, there just isn’t enough labor from the warehouses to the stores to replenish shelves faster than people are buying. It’s not a shortage of inventory. Telling people to hoard, along with all the hoarding that’s already taken place, is contributing to the appearance of scarcity.

Everyone needs to stop hoarding, it’s incredibly selfish and short-sighted.

Spring is starting here in the Northern hemisphere, my #1 recommendation to everyone is to put a lot of effort and energy into growing your own food if you have the means. If you don’t have yard space, garden boxes are easy to build. There’s probably not a better way to spend your time over these next few months honestly.

@teraz, Thank you, we need more of this.
Everyone needs to consider their community and help the elderly. Try and help your neighbour who can’t otherwise go to the shops themselves.

Some great advice!
