Any 1999 sets of booster packs you'd open vs keep sealed?

Hello,

Is there are booster pack you’d open from 1999, if you are looking for value?

How about disregarding value, are any packs more fun to open in your opinion?

Thank you!

I’d never open anything that’s a light. And English 1999 packs are amongst the easiest sets to weigh. They didn’t have reverses or anything that would mess with card weights.

Statistically speaking the pack (even heavy) is worth more sealed.

Also I’ll add
Base unlimited has decent print quality
Jungle and fossil have silvering issues. So don’t be lured in by the 10 prices. Team rocket is Charizard or bust but also has good print quality

ah okay.

hm do you think i could feel a crimp misprint through the unlimited pack by rubbing it? haha.

also is the myth about a “red stripe” under the pull to open tab on the back have any worth?

Only if youve got really sensitive fingers, but you can always buy modern packs to test out foil thickness.

Is this packs or decks? Can you clarify what the myth is?

foils can be felt? if so i may have to do exactly that and practice on a fresh pack.

for the “red stripe” (see and this is why i like AI for general info only) - apparently some think it indicates a stronger likelihood of holographics in the deck?

Ah yeah ai is misleading you. I suspect it is pulling info from these things.

Which other members like tcagaming will have more info on. To my knowledge, the tab indicates higher probability of shadowless/errors, not holos. Since all theme decks have holos

yes definitely smart to question AI at times. sometimes i refute them and they’re like, “well, yes, good point”, and then they seemingly contradict their previous opinions

Interesting.

And is there any possible theorized way to differentiate an unlimited with shadows vs shadowless?

@TCAGaming is the master of these things.

It’s a dangerous game you are playing though, just be warned! The desirable shadowless errors you can find in these decks are very rare

i value the thrill of buying and simply knowing that there’s a possibility that something nice is in the pack.

i doubt ill open them. unless there’s a clear indication that i should.

but with that said, i do hope to find some cool utility / abilities of cards with nice art as well at some point

for example, there’s a MTG card called “word of command” that says something like, “look at your opponent’s hand and pick a card from it”

edit - though i will say… after looking at all those singles on this site, im really now tempted to open the base set!

Most vintage packs have a negative expected value. This means that if you open them, you will almost assuredly lose money. If the pack is weighed, the heavy packs (those that are likely to contain a chase card) have a chance at a positive expected value, which is why they cost much more.

I would only recommend opening vintage packs if you want the experience. If you want to do it for profit, you will go negative.

Thanks.

I bought a scale off Amazon just now, just in case it’s heavy because I do have fun opening packs.

But if it’s light, I think I’ll just grade it as a long crimp.

Most of the weights in the pack database are short crimp so take your results with an extra grain of salt

Ah.. very good to know!
Off the top of your head since we’re here, any idea what the extra crimp weights?

I don’t have a full box for reference so obviously it would be an estimate

Not really sure, is it base set?

This is a start (short crimps)

Cool - I appreciate that

Maybe I look for >22.

Now that I’ve bought some cool singles (German Alakazam 1st ed holo, Japanese Gyarados 1st ed holo), I’m more inclined to keep it sealed.

Will have to feel it out once it’s in my hands.

Japanese Jungle - Neo Destiny packs have a guaranteed holo so they are the most fun to open imo

I’ve opened 2 English fossil packs and one of the two contained a holo and it Was from the lighter of the 2 packs, it’s always a gamble and you’re more than likely going to be losing money if you rip it, however the experience is incredible and vintage packs have more “hits” than modern with the commons & uncommons and it’s cool owning vintage cards you pulled

Hell yeah. Good to know.

Yes I felt the same about packs of baseball when I was younger. I don’t know if I can control the compulsion my entire life, staring at a pack from 1999.

Guaranteed holo sounds fun.

I asked Santa for a pack of black bolt and white flare yesterday.

It’s a blast, been working on my goal of opening each Japanese vintage set with a guaranteed holo.

The pack will definitely talk to you like the green goblin mask everyday lol, it’s fun to rip if you decide to for the experience but like most things it’s better to keep it sealed but that’s not as fun lmao

It helps if you buy the singles you want to pull from the set before opening packs. So you don’t “need” to pull it

Definitely, however for me with opening vintage I look it as an overall experience and it would always be nice to pull my favorite card but in the end whatever I pull I’ll more than likely be happy with it and it’s nice to get a cool card by chance that I may have not bought before.

Buying singles you want will always be the better move but the experience of traveling back in time and opening some vintage is an incredible experience.

The holos I’ve pulled while they may not be my favorite artworks but they are some of my favorite cards in my collection because I pulled them myself!

Overall it’s all about what you value in a pack outside of the dollar value when it comes to ripping them.
