Also the fact that the singles in a pack probably have a good chance of being in good condition.
Or is this not true for vintage?

It’s definitely true, I wouldn’t personally buy the narrative you’ll find (often on whatnot) that opening a pack is the only way to get a gem mint raw
Different sets have different factory issues to be expected
It all depends, I’ve had damaged cards come out of my vintage packs but it’s usually a small corner issue, silvering or some other small defects but I feel like that can reign true for modern as well.
The holo foil and eye appeal have been great as there is no major damage/wear/ scratching to that portion of the card.
With vintage someone could have stepped on a loose pack and you wouldn’t necessarily know unless you know the exact origin of the pack.
The cards will be “pack fresh” but with factory errors and the unknown the condition on the cards varies from pack to pack.
Do you guys think it would be useful to include a brief list of known factory issues for each set in the pack weight database? I assume these things are known when ripping packs but they probably are not with how big the hobby is?
It could be a nice little addition, so many new collectors expect every card to be a gem Mint 10 when they pull it and could be helpful as many factory issues. Many vintage sets all have similar issues, so it could be a little advisory that opening packs is a risk
If you find anyone opening any vintage packs, please let me know! Id like to document whats pulled. Any leads would be appreciated.
I’ve been recording my vintage Japanese openings to document them and watch them back in the future, this weekend I’ll make a thread with each pack and pull for this collecting goal
Though i do appeciate it, japans a whole nother monster. Im more focused on english wotc. Primarily based through fossil, but I’m interested in anything. There’s clues in the later packs as well.
It would be interesting to know if Japan changed the way they printed though
I am waiting on a fossil in the mail.
If my base unlimited isn’t heavy I’ll probably grade it because long crimp I like the look of.
But the fossil is tempting to open.
Any insight on what you know about the pulls here or what you’re looking for as far as information goes? It’s the original fossil pack, don’t know if ‘base’ applys but you know. English version.
I’ve got a ton of information on the later stuff. Like 99 to 2000 base jungle and fossil.. if you do end up opening any packs, I’d love to see them and if you wanna contribute a common to a good cause, I’d love to see what they are that come out of that pack. We are looking at the ink and card stock basically.
Just saw your base-fossil deep dive thread.
Cool stuff - I did’t know much about the detailing of the cards. I’m more of a thrill-ripper (I don’t think I can rip the crimp though unless it’s a heavy one).
Perhaps I rip the fossil. If I do, sure why not I’ll give one for science.
Id throw you a few bucks for it. They’ve got so many different packs that it would be cool to know which cards came out of which. I still believe theres a scoence if you break it down
Yeah sure.
I’m expecting it here on Tuesday.
I’ll take pics of the pack, weight, open order.
And I’m fine sending a common.
