Went from wanting only $18k to declining $27,500 in a month. Just goes to show how much in control sellers are right now when it comes to these cards. When the $19k sale happened, I felt we could see 9s sell for $30k by the end of the year. At this point we might see 9s reach $40k, matching last years value of the 10. It’s questionable whether this will stick in the long run though.
27k offer for psa9 zard!! Damn my 8s gna be hitting 15/18k soon!! I wouldn’t be surprised to see 9 hitting 35k tbf who knows about the future in years to come it could be 70k lol I guess it’s one of those cards that when u sell u better be prepared for the card to rise in price afterwards so make damn sure the reason to sell is worth it!!
Yesterday after a long talk with another known collector he offered $22K for my 1st Ed Zard 9 and it was honestly hard to say no, considering the price i paid and the time frame between this and the offer. I considered the sale for a couple hours but came to the conclusion that i wont be able to buy the card again, probably never again, plus mine is a self graded copy.
At one point, if you do not truly need the money, why would you sell? You are pretty much guaranteed to never be able to buy it back in the future. The demand is so high compared to the offer that prices keep raising.
Noone is his right mind would honestly hope and wait for it to come back to 10k or lower, the market will absorb the entire population far before it ever reaches that point. In the grand scheme of things, the pop report is minuscule.
What many are missing is the “multiple” owners part of the equation. Single card owners are one thing, multiple card owners are an entirely different scenerio. What level does the 2x 3x 4x 50x holder let one or more go? SMPratte sold a 1st ed zard PSA9 for 10k on fleabay not that many month ago. It was a record at that time and considered crazy.
I think your logic for not selling is very important to take into account when it comes to this card. For everyone who collects pokemon, this is the most visible and iconic card in the hobby. There probably isn’t a single serious collector who does not aspire to possess this card, in whatever grade they deem is the most attainable for them. As anyone here can attest, as a collector there’s not a lot that compares to holding this card in your hand. Does that mean there’s an infinite price ceiling on the card? No way. BUT it is probably one of the last cards any collector wants to part with unless they are exiting the hobby.
yeah, with the 10 being much much higher in prices, the 9 is bound to do some crazy increases because the charizard is too desirable. i wouldn’t be surprised to see 35k+ offers by end of this year, because so many people with 9s will just hold onto them and 9 is the next accessible grade. the 10s are mostly in permanent collections - at this point it would take a massive premium to bring one out. i think we are already seeing that phenomenon play out in real offers.
When the 9’s hit 50k I will consider selling mine haha. Maybe… To be honest I am more surprised by the increase of the lower grades. I bought a 6 last year which I cracked for my binder set, and now that grade is selling for more than what 9’s were selling for at that time. And for the longest time there seemed to be an endless supply of PSA 9 Charizards. PWCC had at least 1 and often several every month for ages.
i think that’s the beauty of illiquid investment classes such as collectibles. It’s much more convenient to buy than to sell, so the supply gradually gets removed which provides upward price pressure on the cards (assuming the franchise stays healthy)
And when you combine that gradual supply removal with sudden new interest, prices explode
I agree with Jon, I obviously sold him the PSA 10 Charizard, but I can attest to that card truly feeling special to own and to have in your hands. It’s something else. Hard to get that feeling with a lot of collectibles.
Now, a Patrick Mahomes Gold Prizm rookie is extremely fun to own too (the reason for my zard sale) but the level of nostalgia just doesn’t compare
Recently bought a 1st edition booster box - it’s another item that gives you that “wooo” feeling, definitely makes it hard to ever sell
People laughed when I downgraded from PSA9/10 to PSA 6 1st edition base set. Obviously I wont see the same returns in the end or have the IG clout but my collection is 3 times the size and worth much more than it was 9 month ago.
Well, what did you get? I’m intirigued to hear what you got. We’re you looking to increase your worth in the cards or just reach goals you were aiming for?
My goal was strictly to grow my collection, I don’t really have any financial interest in the hobby. At the time I had a handful of PSA 9 & 10 1st edition base set cards that I sold and repurchased in a lower grade. I specifically searched for very strong PSA 6 cards that were 100% perfect aside from a small binder ding or dent to replace the cards I sold. With the leftover capital I was able to complete some binder goals, a PSA 9 Neo Discovery Holo set, and PSA 9 Neo Genesis Holo set before the massive price spikes.
Personally, I am much happier having a large collection and more cards to enjoy and admire as opposed to a handful of high value set cards. Especially with the recent price spikes and how much harder the cards are becoming to acquire, even in lower grades.(being in Canada doesn’t help either.)
I pretty much took the same path you did, i was a lover of the ex era, it was the peak of my collecting times and back in early 2019 after completing base 1st Ed i had to decide what to do. It was either save the money for a big purchase or slowly build all 139 Set Ex cards in gem mint - mint condition.
I went for the 139 instead of buying big single card every once in a while and i honestly dont regret my choice, and even now, most of the cards i acquired got an exponential increase in value.
In the end, most of us are ‘‘still’’ collectors right?
