they will absolutely keep doing it, and once they see how profitable it is, they will follow the same cycle as sports cards. not that it’s not working, but even the fans realize how asinine it is. there are literally hundreds of 1/1 rookie cards of the same player, and thousands of 1/1 s of that same player over the course of their career. it’s gotten to the point that sets like Archives aren’t even considered true 1/1s because of how many of them are shoehorned into the set.
we’ve had the junk wax era, we’re probably in the junk slab era, can’t wait for the junk 1/1 era. not that i hate chase cards or anything, just not necessarily looking forward to 1/1 charizard in every set.
I got a kick reading the lotto headlines at the bottom. Psh. Forget the LOTTO! I can get 1the One Ring!
Yup…
Only if you wear it. But the Wraiths can still find you.
Some are positing that WotC is holding the Ring for a later box, so that sales don’t drop off a cliff. Also, I wondered if this is illegal somehow. Since it literally IS gambling, and if they are holding it, it’s a rigged game and bait and switch… No?
The default conspiracy that WOTC is holding onto the ring and lying to everyone is so dumb imo. Everyone just wants to be mad at something, even when there’s no evidence of it.
It’s not quite that. Like sure. The incentive is there for them, so it’s possible, and WOTC has shown their ass quite a few times lately. But the whole, “You KNOW this is what they are doing,” smug cynicism without so much as a rumor is just exhausting and lame.
And also, imo, it’s a better business move to do it legit and not risk killing your golden goose in the first go around.
Pokemon doesn’t need to resort to something like that yet. They have an incredible tendency to gauge interest in their sets and come up with new and exciting “chase” cards when things feel stale.
MTG was on a downward trend since the highs of 2021 and needed to find some way to excite their consumer base. First it was Neon Dynasty ink foil cards, then it was Gilded foils, then vintage cards packed into collector boosters (Legends), and finally serialized cards. The trend toward extreme artificial scarcity has been coming for some time now.
From a collecting standpoint I think the set is a very solid one. The LOTR connection was done very well. The serialized rings are pretty lame imo and I do hope Pokemon never goes that route, but I can’t lie that the 1/1 ring chase streams aren’t fun to watch. Regardless, the connected art cards and abundance of lotr references are super cool. I am definitely considering buying some of these as singles. The hype surrounding this set is just what Hasbro wants, so sadly i think MTG will move further and further into serialized hype cards.
While I would pay to see it discovered late by a random kid and stuffed in a 9 pocket page 3-ring binder, or see it thrown into an actual volcano, I would also pay to see this.
Hopefully, that badge is genuine leather.
Magic has been on a down trend since Secret Lairs were conceived! At least since 2019, probably earlier. Once Hasbro decided to…
hold up! Imma be back.
