So I recently found myself looking at old cards from Yugioh and was wondering if someone who had experience with grading older Ultimate Rares could tell me how they consider the backs of those cards. Because many of them have what looks like surface damage on the back I assume it can make them extremely hard to grade in a 10, But I figured someone on here must have the knowledge.
Gold Rare: Holo Image, Golden pressed name, Golden Holo Attribute, Golden Holo Level, Golden Holo Card Border, Image Border, and Description Border
Ghost Rare: Mirror-Silver Image and Mirror-Silver name
Those are the basic rarities. Of course there are loads of others like Prismatic Secret Rares, Platinum Rares, Starfoil Rares, Parallel Rares, Duel Terminal Parallel Rares, etc. etc. And derived rarities from those above like Green Rare, Blue Rare, Ultra Parallel Rare, Gold Secret Rare, etc. etc. But let’s ignore those for now.
And then there are even more derived of those. These differences are changed over time or are region-dependent. I will go into detail for the Ultimate Rares (which has the most of those variations):
Ultimate Rare v1 (US): Golden Name, Partly Holo Image, Holo Attribute, Level, Image Border (US fine print)
Based on some pictures of Ultimate Rares I found from the Soul of the Duelist set as well as the Light of Destruction set that @craigc mentioned, it seems he is talking about the Ultimate Rares v2, where the entire image is holo unlike v1 and v6, but where there isn’t a holo card border nor description border unlike v3, v4, or v5.
Hope this clarifies some things of what we are looking for, and which different Ultimate Rares there are.
As for your actual question Craig, I’m afraid I’m unable to help. I’ve only graded 5 Pokémon cards to begin with, although I could at least help somewhat with that, but I have zero experience or knowledge about grading Yu-Gi-Oh cards…
Wow thanks for all of the information. I played Yu-Gi-Oh a lot when I was younger and didn’t really realize that there were differences and so many versions of ultimate rares. Then again when I was a kid I also thought shadowless cards were fakes. Definitely appreciate all of the knowledge.
Ultimate rares are particularly hard to grade usually because they usually come with ulti imprints on the back of the card straight out of the pack, some lighter than others. If the imprint is light or basically nonexistent, you have a decent chance at a 10. Ultimates from Rise of Destiny and Soul of the Duelist have other surface issues on the back in addition to the ulti imprints so those are super tough to get 10s.
To clarify to those out of the Yugioh loop about ultimate rares, in the earlier years of Yugioh, pack weighing has become a major problem in the hobby (I believe still is until they changed the rarity distribution) where the scaling of packs has become so common that there were tutorials and faqs on how to scale for holos in packs.
One of the solutions thought out was to create an Ultimate Rare variant (a rarity with no specific pull rate and can upgrade any rarity aside from Secret rares) so that non-scalers would have a chance in pulling something valuable from packs. Ultimate rare packs weighs the same as non-holo packs, making them impossible to scale. In order to do that however, they need to thin out the cardboard I think because the print sometimes goes through the cardboard and you see the stamp going through the back of the card.
To answer your question, yes, that type of stamped damage, if this the damage you are talking about, does affect the PSA grade from my experience in looking at purchasing ultimate rare PSA 9-10 yugioh cards. None of them from what I have seen have this stamped damage on the back.
Thanks, thats pretty much exactly what I was looking for. I’m looking back at Mobius the Frost Monarchs I had and I felt like it would be counted as damage. Its kind of cool though, I may look into old ultimates and trying to get 10s. Seems like a fun challenge after looking at some of the POP reports too.
