Actually, I apologize. I edited it in after I posted. But here,
"Yeah man. A guy on eBay with <70 feedback will be believed and get max value out of their card because they make a title that says “strong 9” and the 15 pictures they take of the card in all angles as opposed to a bigger guy with 5000+ seller feedback who everyone already knows and trusts with 2 photos. Surely that’s how it works.
That’s why the other PSA 9 is still up despite being 60 bucks cheaper than the auction. Makes total sense. You’re truly a visionary."
It’s easy for a big name to sell a big card on the merit of their name. It’s not easy for smaller collectors to sell a card for the same value without the newest PSA certifications on them.
It’s pretty funny to think that this thread would only be one page and have a lot less commotion if OP just said, “offering $300 for PSA 9 jungle snorlax, up to $400 for a strong copy” instead of differentiating prices based on certs lol
That’s OP’s whole point. He is stating that he believes the market will punish him for having an older cert when it comes time to resell his card, regardless of the strength of the card/grade.
Well we are here to inform you that the market will not punish you! All you have to do is buy the card not the cert! If there is no back picture, ask for a picture. If it doesn’t look like it deserves that grade, then don’t buy the card.
Well, you’re in luck! the whole 4XXX are superior thing currently going on is just a meme, there’s no evidence to back this up and serious collectors know how silly it sounds!
I’ll always advocate for buying the card (condition) and not the grade (or cert), as that’s what collectors value!
I think at best one can argue 4 certs are marginally better on average than 2 certs. Does that mean you should be paying a 25% premium for a 4 cert? That is your choice but I think if everyone did that, I would just buy all the 2 cert 10s and regrade them to 4 certs and make a lot of $$$ for little work. I have over 100 PSA 10 cards and would say the 4 series cards are slightly cleaner on average but not by anywhere close to what that 25% premium would imply. There are also people like Gary who have far more PSA 10 slabs and he would tell you that 2 and 4 certs are broadly similar.
This is what I’m here for. Is that “marginally better on average” outweighing my limited influence on the market? Will the former grow even more powerful in enough time after I make my purchase? I have to assume yes to both. It makes logical sense really.
Paying 25% more now means nothing in raw numbers and is well worth taking that insurance to hedge the issue I’ve been talking about in this thread.
I believe if you did crack all your 2 cert PSA 10s and regraded them to 4s, you may not like what happens. Many of them may go to 9s. And then what? I’ve seen quite a few YouTubers mad at PSA and resend cards just to prove their standards have been raised. 9’s going to 8’s, 10s to 8s. 10s to 9s. Etc.
