When he said weak, i think he means a base 9.5 (all 9.5 with one subgrade at 9.0). I think the recent PWCC auctions from 6 months or more ago were in that range. I believe they were basically just a bit more than the PSA 9 price.
All BGS 9.5s are weak. If they’re strong they’re going to psa 10s. Auctions suck for BGS cards, I hate using them to determine pricing. Very few people search BGS on a regular bases. I just don’t see someone selling a charizard with a gem mint label on it for that low outside of auction.
It’s a tough sell, but there’s also not a lot of competition.
Fair enough, I just hate the term weak grade… You’re buying a range of a card when you buy any grade. If you want to see the card and judge it fine, it just muddies up the negotiation process to have me look at a graded card and ‘grade’ the grade imo.
I have a few quad BGS 9.5s and I think they hold up pretty well against PSA 10. At least the examples I have come across. Yes, it’s unfortunate the Pokemon world does not value BGS the same - this is supporting the theory that a lot of people do just look at the grade/company and not necessarily the card. In MTG, I believe the PSA 10 and BGS 9.5 quads are somewhat on a parity based on some recent numbers I’ve seen. Not sure if it’s because the MTG crowd is a big older, maybe more aware of the card condition than the actual grade. Well, in the MTG world, the different BGS 9.5 grades are very distinct to collectors. The holy grail is getting a quad 9.5 or better. Those premiums are quite nice. Flip over to Pokemon, the BGS market is just anemic. To me, I prefer the bulkier BGS slabs to protect and showcase my cards. I do hope BGS gets its due soon. But BGS needs to do work too to get its lower grades to be more consistent.
I sold my Charizard for around 4.6k about 5 months back. I think if it looks to be a PSA 9 quality, I would think anything near 5k is fair, and anything closer to 4.5k would be a good deal for those subgrades.
Boy do I agree with this. It’s really a rather new phenomenon. My first 20years dealing with PSA I never got such questions. This last 3-5 years it’s been an epidemic. Another thing that’s new is the search for labels of a certain type. I think it hurts you to care about that too.
Big no to this. lol. Even if we only took data from eBay. This statement is incorrect. Bgs 9.5 has breached 15k once. That was for a quad, at what I would consider the peak last year. There have been multiple sales for a regular 1x 9 sub. 9.5 at under 10k. That’s not taking into consideration the few I’ve seen switch hands on platforms such as Instagram. If you’re a collector who has enough knowledge and money to purchase a card for 10k. You’re going to understand that this 9.5 isn’t going to be any stronger than a good 9. You also contradicted yourself by saying all 9.5’s are weak, and if they weren’t. They would be psa 10. Which is true. The majority are PSA 9’s in another companies graded case. So why would these be worth 15-20k? Keep in mind I’ve owned multiple copies of all grades of 1st ed base Charizard’s. (Not including 10) I’m not just a speculator. I’ve been involved in the market of this card.
Worth more because of the chance to cross to a PSA 10 and save $ in the process. People love gambling on stuff like that, and so of course sellers will cash in on that game.
