Well, just that Kotaku may be projecting that they’re looking to use deviants for clickbait, but whether their readers are deviants or if they are deviants themselves, is just conjecture.
I do collect Full art cards with traditional JP garb - A few MtG cards recently, and there are some kimono-wearing trainers like Erika that fall into that category. Which reminds me, I have some 1950s postcards and items that my grandpa collected in Japan (air force), which are very much the same thing.
there is definitely something peculiar (to put it lightly) going on with full-art trainer cards. it seems there are issues with sexualization of minors in Japan, especially in “adult media” such as anime/manga. i don’t know exactly how that impacts prices, but it’s something that should be considered, despite how gross it may make us feel.
it’s probably fine to enjoy sexy anime girls, as long as they’re depicting adults. it also isn’t inherently gross to want to collect a full-art misty or something— you can just like the card and it not be a big deal. that being said, it’s hard to not get a little sussed out by grown men tunneling cards with 12 year old girls on them
It’s an app similar to TCGPlayer but for Mainland China only. You need a Chinese (+86) phone number to access listings and market trends. I had a number I applied several years ago in case I need it during business trips, so I was able to pass the phone verification with it and pull the trends out.
Somehow doesn’t come as a surprise to me after seeing people who will shill out $2k per banner in a mobile gacha just for a chance to get a PNG of their favourite girl. Gacha culture and whaling tends to be more socially acceptable in Asia than in Western countries (but even that is starting to change with the widespread popularity of anime and video games). In my completely subjective opinion, ‘waifu’ cards probably scratch a similar itch for these types of people.
Moral of the story: never underestimate (rich) weebs
