I’ve never really been able to comment on the popularity of cards outside WotC-Era - that’s what I enjoy / collect and the vast majority of what I sell. However, I just recently purchased a HUGE Collection that contained everything from Base to Evolutions (literally everything in between).
I just started listing my EX Series: EX Cards on eBay and I must say; all you “EX Haters” are WRONG! LOL I listed 50ish EX Cards within my eBay Store last night - less than 24 Hrs. Ago. Everything was listed via BIN with Best Offer at a price-point higher than 2-3 Lowest Priced BIN Listings on eBay for Exact Card / Condition. I woke-up this morning to my eBay Messages “Inbox” FILLED with Questions / Offers on these Cards and have already sold 20ish Cards!
Now, this interest could be for a couple reasons… Everything is still considered a “New” Listing - first couple of days is when you get the most interest / offers from my experiences. Secondly, there really aren’t many other options on eBay… Unlike WotC Holo Cards where you have countless options available; majority of the cards I listed last night only had 10-15 other options available - and we’re not just talking the “rare” EX Cards - I noticed this with majority of the cards I listed last night.
A trend that I did notice amongst collectors of EX Cards… They are SUPER PICKY!!! Haha I’ve never received so many requests for additional pictures before listing these cards - it seemed like every other question I responded too was asking for additional pictures and/or asking if there were any scratches on Holo.
I’m not trying to argue these cards are super rare and/or valuable; however, there are DEFINITELY people who are BIG into collecting these cards!
The reason why we are so picky is because they’re so incredibly frail, and a lot of pictures that seem completely mint can hide a lot of minor scratches especially in the holo border. I very rarely gamble on ungraded cards when im buying ex. I usually say you can breathe on them and they’ll gain wear. (I wish i was joking.) This is speculative but i seriously doubt the gem mint grade pop would increase that much even if there is a resurgence of popularity now that the children of mid 2000’s are gaining the income to buy back their memories. Even binder cards stored with care are rarely still in amazing condition when it comes to this generation. Theres also a scary rate of cards that come damaged straight out of packs, due to foil warping from temperature.
I once took a gamble on a raw Ex Deoxys Salamence ex. It looked so good on photos but they weren’t the highest quality. The card was quite cheap though so I went for it because it still a nice card even if it’s not mint.
Yeah the fact that these cards are predominantly going for so cheap (not all of them, but a good number of them) is strange. Raw, ungraded cards consistently selling for the same as PSA 9 graded copies does not make any sense.
I could be wrong, but I definitely think there is growth to be had here.
Also, let’s be real: these are some of the most beautiful cards in the TCG.
