Modern will become vintage in a view years. Your children will feel nostalgia for the cards they play with now.
When my brother wants to show his sons a movie (all the good ones we loved as kids) their first question is: “Is it old?” A ten-year-old film is already being rejected.
Your vintage cards could become black and white movies.
To be honest, I don’t think the modern vs vintage argument matters in the grand scheme of things. It’s just another level of identity poli- err collecting, that funnels people into an “us versus them” mentality.
There will always be older collectors who want vintage. Your 1st Edition base set holos that the kids laugh at for stock Sugimori art will still be valuable as long as some boomer is willing to pay for them. Conversely, Moonbreon and Bubble Mew may get eye-rolls from seasoned e4 collectors, but the broccoli tops and skibidi kiddies will shell out top dollars for them.
In short, people should feel comfortable collecting what they want and not judge others for what they like. We’re all into cardboard at the end of the day.
I agree. I think in this day and age people pick “teams” when it comes to everything and if you don’t agree or aren’t on the same “side” you’re enemies.
Most people on E4 are older, that’s why. People tend to collect what they grew up with, and for a lot of us that’s older cards. There’s not some big mystery or conspiracy here.
Generally, vintage has more room for steady growth (less new interest needed for lower supply) and modern overall will have more cards with depreciation if the current trend of high supply rocket emogees reaching vintage prices overnight continues. Supply matters and demand is so fickle. But supply is supply (well Pkono…) and everything is compressed even more when scarce cards disappear into collections or diamond hands. But these cards can become forgotten or even too scarce/less visible, less talked about, less targeted for price manipulated hype runs, etc. ie modern also more volatile over time I would guess. Lots of modern cards I’d like to have now that are nowhere close to what I would pay for them so I’ll wait for them to come down to earth and expect I’ll own them soon enough.
Now, with increasing supply supporting increasing demand, that’s not so bad on modern until or unless all those who came in for the stonks or excitement mostly cash out/check out and go then you get the modern price drops. Sealed not exempted from the dips. We’ve gone from normal fairly predictable vintage growth patterns to what feels like a room of college kids attending their first kegger. And these kids don’t believe in using deodorant so there’s that too.
I’m waiting for vintage Japanese to have a resurgence. Maybe Shohei Ohtani will swing the market. All he needs to do is ONE short crimp break and BAM! But overall both have the future, it’s all collectible. I just wish vintage would settle down a little more so I can re-buy in to the degree I would like, and modern comes down to prices I can live with paying.
This is exactly my mindset, I’m more than happy for a bunch of the market to have their attention on high pop modern full arts while I patiently snag vintage cards
Litterally explained this in my post too: Nostalgia is preventing people from embracing modern as the new norm for pokemon collectors. Most people here are saying vintage has the future when wotc hasn’t been in the lead for growth since 2020
Pokemon has a vice-like grip on collectors right now with their business, and modern has been going up and up with the rise of collectors and awesome pokemon arts. What others have been saying is: why pay this much for a high pop full art when you can pay for low pop vintage? Why would I pay for a vintage card I don’t want? Low pop does not equal good card, and if I don’t like it I’m not buying it. I’d rather get a Moonbreon PSA 10 than a WOTC Heracross PSA 10 any day of the week.
Same here, it kind of surprises me that all these WotC cards get so little love, but I´m selling modern to scoop them up and enjoying it a lot. It´s a bit like the perfect situation. Everything from XY onwards has gone up so much that I pretty much have to sell it, and exchange it directly for Rocket - Neo PSA 10´s.
It isn’t like Pokemon is the first collectible hobby. These really aren’t uncharted waters. The psychology and economics of collecting are quite universal.
These same conversations were had decades ago about sports cards and comic books. There were times when modern in these hobbies took all the spotlight, and vintage was broadly undervalued. But it corrected and fundamentals always won out in the end.
If modern Pokemon “takes the future” and Moonbreon only goes to the moon from here — while vintage stagnates and forever lags behind — then that would mean Pokemon is forever deviating from the patterns seen in literally every other collectible hobby. Anything’s possible but it would be extraordinary and unusual.
To start, if you love modern, I’m pumped for you, and have no shade to throw. Do not give AF what anyone prefers over the other.
With that said, they’ve crushed the past 4 years with amazing art + fun sets. The best two SV sets are 151 and Rocket, which give a nod to vintage. I assume that means us vintage nerds snagged some too for the fun (speaking for myself). From a business standpoint, I think a good group of people are making 9-5 money off each other with the hustle culture (all for those who have the energy ) and are thriving off the energy. It’s SO hard to keep this pace for years n years to come, so it will eventually become dorky again, IMO. This isn’t referring to the gems of Moonbreon and a few other “big-dawg” cards, as I believe those have established themselves in another league.
I do believe some vintage, like most Japanese Base is truly slept on. Happy that 1st Edition Base and others are moving up for selfish reasons.
Everyone here would rather have a moonbreon than a heracross, because its not a fair comparison. Its like saying I’d rather take a base set charizard over a poliwrath.
Regardless, the idea that people here or older collectors don’t embrace modern is just wrong. Majority of the people buying modern right now are the same age as everyone here. In fact many E4 members have been buying modern so long its now vintage. Why E4 doesn’t talk about modern as much as a random discord, is because more collectors here played the game beyond the safari zone.
As for the actual topic, I don’t know why people in pokemon are so hellbent on pitting vintage and modern against one another. Its such a forced limitation.
I don’t see any of what you’re talking about on E4. You mention this topic a lot and I just don’t see it. Almost everybody I know collects a mix of both. Hell almost all the cards I have on display right now in my man cave are modern promos or art rares.
