Who did it better? - Nishida vs. Komiya - 7 on 7

Hey friends,

I thought it would be fun to get some conflicting opinions on who better illustrated a subset of Pokemon!

It started out as a binder idea that I dumpstered bc the different card styles throughout the years bothered me too much to enjoy seeing side by side. For this first one I chose seven cards from a large list of Nishida/Komiya cards I like, so sorry if some of your favorites didn’t make the list. Now…fight!

Nishida hands down.

Unpopular opinion 13/14 of these artworks are eh at best and the only card I’d give the time of day is Neo Discovery Politoed by Komiya

& to top it off Sugimori > All

Nishida’s artwork definitely calls to me more

Nishida definitely draws my attention first and is very pleasing to look at, but Komiya easily takes the cake on Charmeleon, Clefairy and Phanpy IMO.

Nishida, but I’m very biased to her as the vast majority of my favorite works are hers.

Only one that is a contest in my mind is politoed. I love both of those arts a lot. But that Nishida politoed is actually what made me start paying attention to the artist haha!

The two clefairys are both simply amazing

It’s 7/7 Nishida for me. Nishida is one of my favorite artists and I love the style, meanwhile I’m not the biggest fan of Komiya’s style… Sorry :S From these the Growlithe is the best Komiya one though imo.

Komiya 100% for me. But their styles are soo vastly different, an objective comparison is hardly possible IMO. They’ve both mastered their own styles.

This was a very easy choice.

Politoed, Furret, Clefairy wins Komiya for me, the others Nishida (even though komiya is my favorite artist)

I’m the exact opposite! As a whole I prefer these Komiya artworks but the Nishida Clefairy is my favourite of all the cards pictured here.

100% Komiya.

In terms of artwork it all boils down to personal preference but for me it’s not even a close contest.

Komiya pushes the boundaries of Pokemon artwork in a way that not many artists do. As far as I’m concerned there is huge artistic value not just in the drawings themselves, but also in his ‘edginess’ as an artist.

There’s millions of amazing artists in the world who can beautifully draw cute little creatures for a children’s game, but taking the risk of adding a dark, sinister tone to those creatures is a feat in and of itself.
