Which Pokemon has a surprisingly small tcg fandom?

I hate to break this to you, but we are in our late 20s- early 30s

The intern at work today told me he was born in 2005…

I legitimately haven’t ever felt old till then

Absolutely wild. The “must be 21 years or older to purchase alcohol products” sign reads 2004 now, and I still can’t believe it honestly.

If they somehow happen to be on e4 and see this, hello, you know who you are. But in grad school my undergrad was working with me one day and we had ancient equipment that I needed to put data on a floppy from, and I caught them looking at me funny and they said I mean I know what it is I’ve just never seen one in real life. That was…oh dear that was 4-5 years ago now

Idk about everyone else, but after watching that anime episode where plump Raichu gets owned by Ash’s Pikachu after he refuses to evolve it and teaches it Agility, was pretty hard to be a Raichu fan after that

I’m guessing since most Gen 6 folks haven’t been able to get a lot of disposable income, the very popular pokemon of Greninja seems to have a smaller overall collector base. It has gotten quite a bit of love though in the TCG.

Lucha Libre Hawk (?)
I honestly don’t know. I figure it’d be more popular than it is, but doesn’t seem to get a lot of love.

Lapras

Incredibly prominent in the anime. A powerhouse in the video games. Pretty iconic from an aesthetics perspective. Not too many Lapras collectors out there though.

Always thought this also, underrated imo.

I feel Dewgong goes quite unnoticed.

I think of the first movie when they take off from the pier.

In terms of the TCG the only cards I can think of off the top of head would be base set, skyridge and vending.

Meanwhile we have how many holo variations of Magneton? Haha

Diancie, Marshadow, Hoopa. Some mythical Pokemon don’t get the love they deserve.

This surprised me too.

I feel like i’ve found the majority of serious Raichu collectors and there’s maybe only 20 who have more than say 50% of the tcg cards in their collections.

Pikachu has a lot to answer for

How many Raichu cards even are there? For ever Raichu there must be 100 Pikachu for right?

Pidgeot doesn’t have many good cards unfortunately  I wish it did, but lots have odd proportions imo

yeah i think personally a lot of the mons people are naming aren’t that surprising to me (even tho i am fans of a lot of these mons), due to either lack of good “grail”-worthy cards or lack of card variety. in particular i’m thinking of lucario, who i think has like one full full art unless you count the tag team, but also has terrible art variety. a lot of lucario’s cards are in a similar style with very similar poses/expressions and would be pretty boring to collect in my opinion.

as a mew collector, I love the variety of art styles and diffferent personality traits of mew you can see across the span of tcg, i think that range is part of what makes collecting mew so fun for me even though i also love other mons equally. i also love collecting oddish for this reason, as oddish has a lot of fun artworks with different art styles or interesting scenes/poses/emotions. i also think of cards like sleepy tyranitar as examples of giving more range and life to a species collection.

that being said, in my view this is mainly an issue with overprinting moneymaker cards like Pikachu, Zard, etc. and not trying to build fandoms of all the other amazing mons, which is why I’m really excited for a set like Black Bolt White Flare since they’re giving attention and amazing art to even the most underlooked mons. Like it’s crazy that some of my top chases will be the solosis and larvesta!

Haxorus has been pretty neglected in the TCG since it came out 15 years ago. It’s had something like 10 cards in all of that time, to which most if not all the artworks have been absolutely lackluster. It’s never had a real following considering how bad-ass it looks and is in the games. Unfortunately it doesn’t make the cut as a true Pseudo Legendary and I wonder if that makes a difference in daddy Pokemon’s eyes. In the recent set Black Bolt it’s getting 2 new cards so I hope this helps. Still no sight of a shiny variant artwork though…

TCG there’s around 150 I think. That’s including reverses and all that too.

Hax is a super under appreciated Pokemon

True.

It’s kind of a chicken vs egg situation. Does it not have many good cards because it has a small fandom or does it have a small fandom because it doesn’t have many good cards?

I don’t know how TPCI decides which Pokemon get the chase card treatment/great artworks but I assume they start with Pokemon who have a large fandom because that = more sales.

At least that’s how I was looking at the question because I can’t think of a Pokemon that has a lot of great cards but a small fandom

Darkrai collectors:

Haxorus’s design is really intersting. I feel like it’s a forgotten dragon. I also feel like it looks more “pokemon-esque” than a lot of things around that time. Maybe being in Gen 5 hurt it’s popularity? IDK. I’ve always really liked this thing more than most dragons prior.
