So, judging by eBay anyway, prices seem similar, except for 1-2 listings with outrageous prices. So maybe you guys can fill me in on which may be the rarer one, or/and more expensive as well.
Ive noticed that a good majority of your threads posted here all relate to “whats the most rare x” or “whats the most expensive x” and figured id chime in. It never hurts to ask questions of course, but personally I feel the longer one goes on their collecting journey the more understanding and learning how to find this information on ones own becomes pivotal. After all, anyone can give that sort of information out but what if someone else is wrong, or what if theres something someone here doesnt know? Youll eventually be stuck in one way or another, so let me try to help by giving some tools so that you yourself can source this stuff.
Understand what rarity is. A lot of times, rarity gets coupled in with scarcity, and sometimes these can relate to each other, but sometimes it doesnt. Make sure you have a clear definition of each. The less of something made, the more rare it is by nature.
Learn how to identify the items your looking for so that you can search for info yourself. Before looking at your pictures here, I had no idea what that first one was. i see “meiji” on the card there as a word that i can identify, so my first idea of a search would be “meiji mew”. Easy enough, but youd be surprised how many people have no idea what something is just in looking at it. Year release info can also be helpful, and well as if the card has any numbers on it like set info. note these, and use that to help source items.
Google and ebay searches will be your friend. Sometimes, a lot of info is hard to access but for the most part you can find everything your looking for 99 percent of the time by just typing the right question into a specific search engine. IE right now. Using this question as an example, search for “what mew is the corrected mew”, “how much was made of x” “how was x card distributed” etc etc. The more questions you ask, the more answers youll find and that will even expand your resource database naturally as well. Then when you ask these questions for each card, compare the two and determine which might be the answer to your 3rd question of “which is more rare”. Additionally, searching ebay “last sold” prices too can help in terms of that data which can factor into questions like “which is more expensive”.
Save your resources for reference. Bulbapedia is a godsend for the tcg, and so is the forum here, but theres also many other places that may or may not have additional information that can help you along the way. Finding these usually again comes from question asking, so make sure youre taking in all these places you find and salvaging the most of what you see. the more information, the better.
Know that youre not always going to find the answers you want. As a merch collector myself in addition to the tcg, im always hitting roadblocks with questions people cant answer. It gets frustrating, but usually those are places where you might want to find others who may have more resources for you or you can continue to just fine tune your search skills. If still coming up blank, leave the question opened ended.
have fun with this all and know collecting isnt always easy and it can become work, but the work is the most rewarding part. Would you rather get constant handouts or would you rather expand your knowledge base by hands on learning so that you can become the great collector you want to be? The choice there is easy for me, but taking that ownership and really holding that passion is where the true magic of collecting lies.
Personally for me, neither. I like the southern Islands Mew or Goldstar Mew. Out of these two though the corrected version of ancient mew would be the better buy in my opinion.
