It’s a TFG (Trading Figure Game) card. The iykyk mostly refers to the Groundbreakers set, instead of Next Quest set, which is much rarer. So @cryingatnight is pretty happy he found it for a decent price, especially since it usually has the Charizard tax on top of it being from the rarer Groundbreakers set.
Little bit of background of the TFG: they started with the Next Quest set, containing 8 cards and 42 figures. Unfortunately, it wasn’t too popular, so even though they were already working on the second Groundbreakers set, the entire TFG was cancelled eventually.
Two or three blisters of Groundbreakers figures + cards were released for a 2-3 week period before the TFG was cancelled completely. Therefore the six (out of eight planned) available cards from this Groundbreakers set are very hard to come by. Likewise, the figures are extremely rare, the ones that weren’t available in those blisters even more so, since they’re mostly unreleased prototypes. There is also a third unnamed set with figures, and the figures that have been released of that set (not all have) were created and released directly by the Chinese factory that created the figures. The figures from the third set are therefore easier to find than those of the second Groundbreakers set.
The two unreleased Groundbreakers cards were never released, and a.f.a.i.k. also never made. And the third unnamed set didn’t had any cards designed yet when the TFG was cancelled.
If you want more information, I can recommend watching HamsterBomb’s YouTube video series, which is where I have most of this information from, mostly focused on the figures themselves, and not so much on the cards. Bulbapedia’s TFG information is also not too bad regarding the TFG.
The groundbreakers cards are nearly impossible to come across these days other than for absolutely absurd prices. I still need the groundbreakers switch card (which is $10 for next quest) and the only listing I’ve seen is $200+.
The swap spots card sells for a lot more for next quest (about $50, charizard tax) so, if we extrapolate, this would’ve cost me A LOT for a groundbreakers copy. I managed to find it from a mislabeled eBay listing as a next quest card, so I paid $50.
I also still need the swap spots card in French and German if anyone has one laying around
I have a fair few cards missing from a complete 151 set (most of the AR and SARs lol) but I decided to just get this out of the way before it gets even more expensive. Also it’s one of those expensive “roadblock” cards that stops you from completing a set because of the price. With this done, it feels a lot more possible now. Also, I was able to offset about a third of the cost by selling some heavy play WOTC era holos from my spares stash. Was surprised at how fast and for how much beat up cards sell for, even holos that aren’t the top tier in a set.
Also picked up the first Digimon card in a while towards completing Digi Battle Booster 2. I only need a handful of cards now but they aren’t common in the UK anymore. I still need AeroVeedramon, Machinedramon, and Puppetmon holos and I THINK Digidatamon (the egg with the green feet and eyes peeking out from inside…can never remember his name)
Already have complete 1st Ed Starter set and Booster 1. Whether I will bother with the sets beyond Booster 2 I don’t know. They start getting expensive and legitimately rare after that and my focus is Pokemon.
Some recent Mega Evo art rares of my own! Hadn’t seen the Exceggutor or Spearow before so was pleasantly surprised to find them in the seller’s inventory when grabbing the Ninjask and Shedinja.
