What was your best find!

So I decided to put together a few of the first Pokemon sets as I had a decent amount of the non holos from them. I am doing Base set 1, Fossil, Jungle and Team Rocket.

I went to a card shop a couple weeks ago and founds the case with single Pokemon cards and found 2 I needed. Seeing as most places only had 1 card I needed (if that), this was a success. I asked the guy if I could see them closer and he says “we actually have a huge box of singles back here, but they’re not updated prices… so don’t tell me what they’re worth please” lol. I guess they were priced pre-Covid.

I got there 15 minutes before closing and had to rifle through these so fast lol, it was pretty intense honestly. I grabbed all the ones I needed which was about 12 holos, all priced at like $2 a piece lol some a bit more that were mint. This angel of an employee then goes “want a Blastoise?” I go, “dude… yes, please!”. He brings me over 2 of them. One for $10 and one $20. I take em and ask if they had Venusaur. Sure enough, he’s got a great looking one for $20.

I always see stories like this and in my years of collecting, I have never really gotten lucky with finds, ever, so this was a really nice surprise.

Can’t even imagine what prices were like 7-8 years ago!

After you stole them, I mean paid for them did you run out as fast as you could?

Any other time I would have, but the guy was like “Ehhh I don’t care… I don’t make commission” lol. I did come back the next day and grabbed about 15 more that I needed for a couple sets. I tried one more time this past weekend, but they took the box away and said they weren’t available anymore

Damn that’s like 1999-2000 prices at my local card shops.. maybe even less. Nice one!

Thanks guys. It was pretty wild. I basically just got the cheapest ones they had that were in good shape. They had more of each copy for like a dollar or 2 more, but I just wanted to build the set for basically as cheap as I could without getting cards that were in absolute trash condition!

Got 9 of these promo mags of my favorite card for 40 bucks each. 3 of them are still in cellophane wrap. Sold one for 400 a while ago. And probably won’t sell the others for a long time. The rest is in the black. Pretty happy about it.

My best buy has to be buying a 1st ed devo spray for about £100 when they were pulling 500+ at the time.

My other best buy was on ebay. Bought a rocket booster box. Arrived and was 1st edition. Best £83 quid I ever spent

Picked up a complete set of WotC promo cards at my local game store for 250 earlier this year. Lucky stadium and Pokémon center were in nice shape!

Not my best find, but my mom and stepdad snagged these at a garage sale for $15 total. They had no idea what they were worth, just bought them sight on seen. The Dark Dugtrio is a solid PSA 9, and the rest are 7/8. They’re all chilling at PSA atm.

My best find is nowhere near as fun, purchased a PSA 6 1st edition base set Ninetales for about $70 last year. Sorry to say that I sold it before prices went up.

Earlier this year, found a Base Set Zapdos Holo at a local antique shop. Looked like someone just pulled it out of a pack… $5 price tag… Sent it off to grading and it came back a PSA 10! Always a good feel
