For me it’s WotC era (base-skyridge) in foreign languages (German,French,Italian etc etc) and I also collect ultra rares (gold stars ex V Vmax etc etc) in all languages made possible
And tell me why you collect that certain era or type of card
Personally, I’m pretty attached to the early WOTC so I mainly collect that. I’ve delved a bit into the E-Reader sets as well as they have some really unique artworks and cards. My biggest purchases have been in WOTC sets overall.
I’m also slowly getting into some Japanese cards, both vintage & modern. Some really cool stuff from the XY era that I like and a bunch of others. So much I still don’t know about the Japanese sets, a lot to explore.
I also have bought some sealed modern boxes. I got a whole case of Evolving Skies simply because I really liked the artwork I was seeing and it’s turned out to be a strong set it seems (I haven’t opened any of it). I still don’t really collect many modern English cards/sets, but I may try and get some more at some point.
Mostly ereaders from expedition to team magma vs team aqua because I believe they have the best art. English when I can and I collect japanese VS and ereader promos
English Base-EX set cards and sealed product with a few extracurricular cards here and there, mostly DPP.
Why? Because this is what I truly enjoy, and I can’t afford to spend money on Pokemon things I don’t truly enjoy. Pokemon is not anywhere close to the top on my list of expenses and priorities.
I’m very picky. I only collect from early WOTC. And E-Series. And ex era. And some Diamond and Pearl. And HGSS. Also some B&W. Big fan of XY. Some Sun and Moon. Also enjoy SwSh. Oh, and promos.
Would be really fascinating to see a poll on this to get a sense of the collecting demographics of the forum. Personally, I mainly focus on early EX era. But I also dabble in late EX, 2002-2007-era Japanese-exclusive promos, 1st Ed. WotC, and e-Series.
WOTC & EX era, with a current focus on E-series cards.
I grew up with Base - Neo Discovery but have fallen in love with the sets printed right after the Pokemon fad died down in the early 2000’s. Imo some of the best artwork in the TCG comes from the E-series and the EX era. I tend to prefer more of the hand-drawn artwork but many of the ex-cards have surprised me with how dynamic the CG models can look depending on the lighting and pose of the Pokemon.
All eras. I buy more modern than anything else because its fun to open. I think the sets have been generally pretty good the last few years. Special sets like celebrations and shining fates are home runs imo. I’d say 90% or more of the cards I’ve bought have been in that modern era of the last 5 or so years. I like buying random promos and “weird” cards that I stumble upon. If I had more money to heavily focus on a particular era of the tcg, itd most likely be WOTC through DPP era though.
