What is the future for base set 2?

Do you think that after the base set 1st edition, shadowless, unlimited ect… price becomes too much (if it comes to that) for normal collectors/investors that there will be a place for base set 2?

@masonkampe your time is coming … jk

OP I don’t think so, there’s a ridiculous amount of base unlimited out there, I can’t see collectors getting priced out of that and causing a demand for BS2 to fill the void in the future any time soon (at least for raw cards … unlimited PSA 10 charizard is getting expensive but 9s are still only a couple hundred).

They just screwed the value by having “2” in the title… No one wants to be “2nd”

Probably part of the reason why a legendary reprint of Zard goes for so much more than the base 2.

Base Unlimited isn’t going to the moon for a few years yet, it’s everywhere.

The 9 pops are huge and the 10 pops are still going to grow quickly. Sealed product is a different story though.

Imo the unl 10 zard is overpriced atm and it will probably keep coming down and stay around $1100-1300 until the next big Pokemon GO level event. It’s quite accessible and rose too quickly to really maintain it’s value.

Base 2 boxes have jumped a bit but there’s already so much base out there, can’t imagine people would prefer the reprint set over the original.

Legendary Collection had a small print run.

It will grow in the future but it will always be the least desired set of that time. I personally don’t mind it as I’ve acquired some great condition base set 2 holos for cheap prices but for it to really take off the other base sets supply would need to dry up and as commented on that seems a long way off.

I think the big base set 2 holos like charizard, venasaur and blastoise have good opportunity for growth going forward, but for the general base set 2 holos (all the rest) to grow significantly will take a long time in my opinion.

This topic gets old tbh, search some older threads and you will see countless posts.

Base set 2 feels like an Unlimited, Unlimited. What does this set even have to offer?

The year is 2986. A PSA 4 1st ed charizard sold for 34 trillion FutureDollars (we’ve solved the issue of inflation by 2063). Wars and supervolcanos have devastated most of the continent of what was once known as North America. Historians estimated that 92% of all Umlimited Base set cards have been destroyed and there are only about 6 million copies of every card in the set remaining. A complete PSA 10 set of Base Unlimited has finally broken the threshold of 50,000 FutureDollars, considered to be the limit for the “normal collector/investor”.

Using modern life-extending technology, a lone individual @masonkampe has been waiting for this moments for hundreds of years. Over the next 247 years, the average Base Set 2 holo price would rise from 35 FutureDollars to 70 FutureDollars. Truly a historic era for Base 2 speculators.

That’s deep, but not profound. At least opening Base 2 can still get you the old school feelz of opening packs. Cheapest option I suppose.

But there you go, “Old school feelz”, “cheapest option”. The tagline to the set is “cheap”. It seems pretty synonymous with the set name at this point. If wotc would have done something, ANYTHING at all to make it stand slightly separate and apart from unlimited; I’m sure people would appreciate it more. As far as I’m aware, the only purpose of even releasing Base set 2 was for tournament play. There was 102 base? The update was 130 for tourney use that removed some base and added some Jungle, slapped a “2” stamp on them and out they went. Sorry if it sounds like I’m shitting on Base Set 2, cause I am, but I can’t find anything positive and fun and historically significant about the set. If there are some really cool tidbits about Base 2 that someone can fill noobs like me in on, that’d be cool. @masonkampe are you up to the task?

Cosmo foil > all.
Swirl hunting will take over someday.

Rofl. Tyvm, this made my day
Poor @masonkampe (at least you’re still alive in the year 2986  )

On topic: As mentioned by others, there are loads of UED Base Set cards out there, which won’t become unaffordable anytime soon. Although I can certainly see a price-raise for the Base Set 2 holos, the prices for the Base Set UED will rise simultaneously, so I doubt there will be loads of investors choosing Base Set 2 over the Base Set. It never was really popular every since it’s release. Legendary Collection has the Reverse Foils, XY Evolutions has the nostalgia after 18 years and the Full Arts / EX cards, but Base Set 2 came too soon after the original Base Set imo and doesn’t have very much too add (except for the Cosmos Holofoil or a new variation for the die-hard collectors who collect single Pokémon variations like myself). If it would have been released somewhere in the middle between the Base Set and XY Evolution, I think it would have been much more popular. A throwback to the old card layout in between all the Reverse Holos and EX sets of its era.

I personally don’t dislike the Base Set 2 at all, though. Pulled a few holos as a kid, so I only have good memories from it personally. I especially like the Poliwrath I still have somewhere in my binder. But my personal opinion doesn’t change the fact that the Base Set 2 is, as its name suggest, 2nd.

Out of all the shit given to base set 2, I really do think the galaxy holo variants of those cards looks awesome. That’s the one thing about base set 2 that I genuinely enjoy

If you’re a vintage set collector and a true completionist, of which there are many, it’ll be hard to ignore Base2.

Base Set 2 is like a golden magikarp. How could you lose?
