Since this is a very common question, I’ve created a thread to post pictures of a card and get a grade estimate. For anyone that would like an estimate from efour post here
For the record, I once made a suggestion for this exact thread but the mods at the time said that they didn’t want to make a thread that encouraged the idea of asking everyone else to act like professional graders through pictures.
the biggest problem right now is turnaround times. Like I can go through 500-1k cards (and am doing that), get my PSA submission rdy, send it in… but I’m going to have no idea if I was right or wrong for like a year. That’s a horrible way to learn ;p. Current literature on the subject is extremely lacking (grading pokemon cards specifically)
Then I wonder why they allow people to make individual “grade this card for me” threads? A megathread seems like a good idea (unless they banned the “grade this card for me” thread topic in the first place, which it doesn’t appear that they have).
Ludkins does pregrades for that exact reason – might be worth submitting with them if that’s a worry of yours? But I also do think this thread is a good idea.
Their theory was that having an actual mega thread would lead to many more “grade my card” requests than if people had to take the initiative to make their own thread
But hey I’m just the messenger. I personally wouldn’t be opposed to this thread at all.
As @hyruleguardian mentioned, there are a couple reasons why a “What grade will this card get” megathread is not helpful.
First, it is impossible to accurately grade a card from pictures. Hell, it’s hard enough when you have the actual card. You can miss dents, creases, scratches, basically the only thing that is apparent in pictures is edgewear and maybe some really obvious flaws. By posting a megathread we would be tacitly endorsing the idea that it is in fact possible to grade a card from pictures.
Second, a megathread must not only be created, it also must be enforced. If people would want to request help on a card grade, it would have to go in here. As we see on a daily (sometimes hourly) basis with the Giant Market Thread, people still make separate threads which should go in the megathread. This means the mods would have to manually move all the separate threads like we do right now. For something like the GMT it is worth the moderator effort because market topics would flood the forum otherwise. We don’t see that with grade requests–frankly the demand for a megathread isn’t there.
We certainly aren’t going to ban people from asking what grade a card is likely to get, as often they are quickly educated that such things are a crapshoot at best. I don’t think there has to be a dichotomy between ‘megathread allowed’ or ‘discussion banned.’
