What are your unpopular opinions in pokemon?

I think ‘buy what you like’ is just advice so you don’t feel too jaded when prices plummet and it is very good advice. Would you rather stare at artwork you really love that is worthless, or something you felt pressured to buy as an investment that is now worthless (that looks like shit in your eyes)?

Money plays a huge factor in all things and whether people like it or not and the existing monetary value or potential monetary value plays a significant role in the desirability of a card.

People complaining about investors/flippers are mostly salty because they’ve been priced out of cards.

thanks dude i was thinking that but i needed sum1 to confirm it. i still dont like the buy what u like thing because they are already planning to fail. can we atleast put sum thought into the finances behind the purchase. i mean there is risk in everything but at least reduce risk by being more educated when making a purchase.

It´s not our job as a collecting community to figure out whether a purchase makes financial sense for a certain individual. We have no background knowledge about these people nor are we financial advisors, therefore the “buy what you enjoy the most” answer is the most polite you can give.

i was talking about the person making the purchase not the community lol. i just want people to be smart with their own choices and they own money. including u. even gary v recommends studying before investing. i dont know how u got the idea i was talking about the community. i was talking about the individual. the individual himself is responsible to do his own research. there community is not responsible for anything. im not talking about myself since i know what to do myself its just that i feel bad for the people who make mistakes in this hobby and it costs them their money. i won’t mention which mistakes cuz i dont want to make an argument because that’s not the nature of the thread.

You are specifically stating: “theres a lot of misleading people away from the investing,…” if you were talking about a singular person making a purchase, who are the people then misleading the guy by saying “buy what you like” if not the community?

buy what you like is seperate from misleading people from investing hustling flipping mentality. i had 2 different unpopular beliefs not one that i posted together. the 2nd part misleading people i ment when people dont like investors, hustlers and flippers and they take action because of it. the first one has nothing to do about the community. the 2nd one is a minority of the community which is salty about other peoples gains. if u still don’t understand sumthing ask me ill help u understand.

Thank you for explaining this accurately, a brilliant argument.

Crystal charizard is the most overrated and one of the worst crystal card artworks second only to crobat imo. And thats including the aquapolis ones as well.

Who is Gary V?

All V/Vmax/Full Art, Ultra Rare, 5ban, etc. art work is terrible.

I would say most rather than all, but yep. Often they are too busy, the entire subject isn’t in frame, there’s no background, the pose is weird, etc.

The doubled edged sword of increasing popularity. I thought things had gotten crazy when I got back into the hobby 2 years ago but recent events have legitimately soured my opinion on modern in general.

Look up Garyvee or Gary Vaynerchuk he recently started buying Pokemon cards. Good guy

Not directly unpopular, but I have found for myself that I love the trainer art work more than individual pokemon artwork based cards. I feel like the trainers just have a lot more room and there is less of a “well it looks like this one” kind of vibe. Lucky Stadium NY, Pokemon Center NY, Lass, Pokemon Breeder all come to mind. But that’s just me haha.

Then you might as well enjoy it while it lasts
If a card leaves your collection, it only means there is room for a new one you can love

I’m not entirely sure if this will be considered unpopular or not but I don’t see why anyone (other than for pure enjoyment) would pump money into modern product vs vintage. People are aware that Pokemon is a huge hit now… As far as I know, nobody knew Pokemon would have this much success back in the late 90’s. The pop numbers for modern are going to exponentially exceed that of vintage - especially in high grades. We weren’t instantly sleeving our cards back in 1999. That seems to be par for the course these days. Seeing these GX or VMax cards in PSA 10 going for similar prices to some 1st ed PSA 9 holos doesn’t make any sense to me.

Thanks for that. there has been a lot of talk about a guy named gary on these forums so I was curious. I thought it was vaynerchuck, but I had no idea he collected the cards.

Well just in case: usually when we talk about ‘Gary’ we mean our dear ‘Gary from Pawn Stars’ @garyis2000, who is and will always be the true Gary of Pokemon. Don’t confuse him with this noob Gary Vee.
