Completely agree. And of all of the Pokemon and artworks they could have possibly used to highlight a set called “The Glory of Team Rocket”, the promo card is a Wobbuffet. What a flop.
I’m quite the opposite where I don’t collect set cards to collect sets anymore, and that might categorise the majority of the consumer base for modern. There’s a bit of something to like for anyone, to cherrypick your favourites (chase cards, species, artists, etc) before moving on to the next exciting thing
Yeah, I can see that. But I like cards that have identity, cohesion, and even immersion. OG Team Rocket feels like it’s a Team Rocket set. Each card serves to paint a larger picture of the set as a whole. It gives off a certain energy. This new set feels like generic art with a Team Rocket label on it. Eh, just not for me sadly.
Yeah you’ve lost it.
Team rockets wobuffet is the BEST member of XY TR. This comment some blasphemy right here.
Well I’ve definitely lost it, but I stand by my comment
The more specific unique sets are few and far between, and it also must tailor to a theme you like. For example, the upcoming Black Bolt & White Flare sets will be supposedly be the next 151-style of special set - made for gen 5 fans. So yeah if you want a cohesive set, it’s not going to be a regular main expansion
I honestly wasn’t really interested in or captivated by 151 either. It has the same issue that all of these modern sets have. They feel like sets that are lying about having an identity, all in an effort to push homogenized art and computerized nonsense and prey on the nostalgia of longtime fans. Sorry, I’m starting to go off the rails lol.
The TCG has lost its charm for me is all..
Excellent on-topic post!
Thank you for reminding me to look at my pack collection more!
Then perhaps what you look for in modern ceased to exist long ago, Pokémon has moved on and expanded for the wider casual interest in new collectors through new collaborations with established artists. Perhaps in their eyes, planning 500 sets for the next 50 years that sell consistently means spreading meaningful content thin
Agree…
Yeah man, people are loving koalas updates on that thread but every time I look im just like
It is nothing compared to wotc team rocket. The best cards in the new set are worse than the weakest cards in the original. Granted none in the original are less than awesome but still.
Been saying it for years, modern is just bland. Occasionally you get Kanda and some true artist giving us divinity but thats the exception.
I don’t like like reshiram or fur bait designs. Why would pokemon even create these type of characters…it does however seem inline with this cutesy generic digital artwork style they moved to.
Makes me wonder who they hired to run the art department.
But there is no set called “The Glory of Team Rocket” with a Wobbuffet promo card.
The English set is called “Destined Rivals” and has other trainers on the pack art as well. This is common with English sets since they have combined JP sets for years, hell, all the way back to e-Series.
That’s certainly a take for this thread.
Nothing says homogenized art like Ken Sugimori on stock art backgrounds that the interns found and that kind of card art lasted all the way into Sun & Moon but strangely I don’t see people clamouring for any of those cards post-WOTC.
I think some people just collect for the nostalgia - which is totally fine, but TPC will not be going back to that and there’s no reason they should either.
Are you still a fan of Pokémon? Many years of every post being negative, haven’t seen any positive posts about Pokémon
Haha well I’m generally a pessimist, but yeah will always be a fan.
To be fair, what I’m saying in that post is that modern art has been on fire for awhile now. Even if you remove the AR/SAR cards, normal art has had such diversity of styles and the number of active artists is the most it has ever been.
Of course some may not think quantity of artists is a sign of progress but it really is. There are now a handful of non-Japanese illustrating too which will again diversify the art further.
Ha fair enough. Just had to check in
The ‘sheen’ on modern full arts (particularly the diagonal effect on SWSH full arts) detracts too much from the art to the point of almost ruining the card. Consequently ARs are better to look at.
For SM trainers onwards, you almost have to look at them in the dark lol.
Art Rares are the best thing to happen to modern Pokemon. Beautiful artwork, full utilisation of the card face, and they can be bought for cheap across so many different sets.
