What are your unpopular opinions in pokemon?

Ultramodern sealed displays are cringe and unsightly. So many Pokemon-related items would look better in a display.

Storing your ETBs in a Target cereal container is cringe.

A lot of early set pack art is nostalgic for me because it’s what I opened as a kid. Stick with the hobby and you’ll feel nostalgic someday

@Vertemes
Here is something for you so you can understand the nostalgia we feel for our old booster packs

I know you’d keep that bad boy sealed

Sealed has looked like shit since 2007 but it’s definitely been on purpose for a while now.

Not to dunk on your collection but for the thread, ETB designs are overwhelmingly mediocre.

Imagine if they had the designs of Japanese deck boxes and playmats. These are basically Ultra Pro Binder stock art designs.

***English sealed.

Japanese sealed box art is what we deserve.

They’re getting close, both booster box and packs share the same illustration assets. The only thing stopping it from being completely identical is having to combine 2 JP sets

Scarlet & Violet has improved for sure.

It’s all good, they’re relatively plain designs. I’m also someone who prefers standard full arts over art rares sometimes, so they’re up my alley. Too big though.

It’s not a booster box, but when I think of product that looks the best sealed, I think of Crystal Guardians. I would get much more enjoyment displaying a blister than opening the packs tbh lol

I’m just a huge fan of blisters in general. They’re the ideal way to display pack art. I’m a huge fan of the ones that have the full evolution line on them. It’s much cooler than shoving them in a binder (except for the intrusive ugly coins)

Even worse is those cheap and nasty collection boxes, with a jumbo card and like 4-6 booster packs of random sets

Holy I rustled a LOT of feathers, so lemme break this down comment by comment:

I would ABSOULTELY LOVE to open a EX Deoxys pack. The thrill of potentially pulling the rayquaza outweighs the risk not weighing one. I will come out happy no matter the outcome.

No not really. There will always be new cards and new sets that release, and because of that I’ll always stay collecting. I also don’t like having to increase space for booster boxes and packs if I don’t have to.

How could this possibly change my mind :sob: :sob:

I also like blisters, so I can agree with you there. I still don´t see the point in having a collection of these however, why would you get a blister only to store it in a box that you’ll probably never look at again? Not to mention the urge to open the packs.

So far no one has given me a valid argument, and I can consistently bring up facts and information without moving the goalpost. Not to mention the “investment” part of sealed collecting hasn’t even been touched in these posts.

I really like you sharing this opinion and the discussions and different perspectives that followed

For me personally, I partially get your perspective, especially when I see people share their “sealed collections” on the Pokemon Investment subreddit for example.

However, I have some sealed items in my own collection that make a lot of sense to me. For me they are the celebration of a historic moment that helped shape my childhood, with which I connect a lot of nostalgia as well. The packages themselves ARE nostalgic to me, not only the content. As a collector, I am interested in owning something with RARITY, which not everyone else owns or can easily get their hands on. Some of these old items are definitely starting to become rarer in sealed condition.

I own the following sealed objects, despite not being a sealed collector (not limited to TCG):

  • Base Set Booster Box: I have very strong memories of seeing these boxes behind the counter in the toy stores.
  • Pokemon Red & Pokemon Blue: If it wasn’t for the video games, none of us would be here collecting the cards. These games were so impactful on my childhood.
  • Pokemon Celebrations UPC: It was near impossible to find this for MSRP. It reminds me of the small victory I had when actually finding it at a local store. I intended to open this for the Metal Cards, but ended up falling in love with how it looks displayed next to my base box, the one that started it all.

I guess in short my opinion would be: collecting sealed items can definitely make sense and there are a wide variety of reasons why someone would want to have a sealed item in their collection.

1st off: Amazing point! Significant milestones rather than nostalgia is quite a valid reason to keep some items sealed. Having a reminder or a keepsake of important memories by using sealed collections is a unique idea, and I can honestly see this as a reason for collecting! Well done!

I can’t say I have a counterargument for this particular situation at all, so I guess there really is at least one reason.

I can give another perhaps: sealed promos.

If I’d only go after all raw cards, my collection would have been this:

But since I also collected all sealed variants, my collection now also includes these:

And I also collect its graded variants to expand the collection even more

I guess the sealed promos are a bit counterproductive, though. Since due to the inserts, I now can’t see the amazing Moltres artwork. But it does allow me to collect more things.

In general I do agree with your opinion, though. Why collect the sealed booster packs and boxes, when you can have both the cards inside it AND still have the empty booster packs and boxes for display purposes. Especially with how expensive sealed products, especially vintage booster boxes, can be.

The main product for which it makes sense to keep them sealed for display purposes are Collection boxes, since something like this:

Of course looks a lot better than just the empty box and packs:

An argument as to why you in particular should collect sealed? You shouldn’t if you don’t like it.

But for those who do like collecting sealed or anything else, the only necessary argument (and the one you have been receiving) is that people will collect what they like because that’s the essence of collecting. It’s not for anyone else to say if personal preference is valid or invalid.

Collecting based on the opinions of others seems like a mistake unless you intend to sell to those people. Speaking of intent to sell…

As for (sealed collecting = investing), I can see feeling that way at your age. I only recently became comfortable spending money without thinking about getting it back. You might see things from another perspective after a decade + in the workforce. Unless you mean investing in present/future happiness :ear_of_corn:, in which case I 100% agree.

The argument why sealed is the worst type of TCG collecting is what I was getting at, not why should I

Look, Vert. You’re a huge fan of Skibidi Toilet and nobody here keeps asking you to justify why you collect memorabilia of a man’s head emerging from a toilet bowl. No need to play the moral high ground by trying to find a “valid argument” when plenty of users have already given personal reasons as to why they enjoy collecting sealed boxes. How are their reasons any less valid than your reasons for liking something?

I understand there’s a lot of frustration surrounding modern sealed collecting with supply shortages and scalping but nobody should ever feel the need to justify why they collect what they do (provided it isn’t illegal).
