Yeah at one point I liked some of the stuff by PLANETA I think.
They started with some CGI holos like Slaking, Magmortar etc.
But now I look at them and they look pretty terrible.
I’m sure there’s some term for it but CGI animation in movies always looked great at the time and then years later you see the same film and wonder how you couldn’t perceive its limitations before. And I don’t mean stuff that look dated on arrival, but stuff that looked real to you before.
Why can the anime and the video games create new things but the tcg can’t? Delta species is also completely new to the tcg. Do you dislike that?
The TCG absolutely can create a new settings and objects. You mentioned Delta Species and are correct that was a fantastic example of a TCG-original creation that was handled well. They crafted an entire backstory, setting and lore that tied into both the Generation 3 games and Mew to explain the phenomena of why Pokémon had different typings.
As for the Master’s Scroll, unless I’m missing something it’s kind of just…there. It exists as a recognition of real world trainers’ achievements at a particular point in time but has never been re-integrated into the TCG. For some, that is enough to give it value and meaning, but for me its lack of continued relevance and integration into the Pokemon universe relegates it to a niche item that I could never see myself wanting to own.
I wonder how the distaste for scrolls and keys compares to that person’s taste for prototypes and other less mainstream things… It’s not a criticism, but an actual curiosity. I can see validity in all views:
“I value as a collector what is part of in-universe PkMn, independent of the real world meta.”
and
" " " " what is part of the official TCG, independent of the the real-world meta."
and
…certainly more: exclusively species collectors, trophy collectors, set collectors…
I’ll tells ya what I WISH the tcg went rogue on. The goofy doofy hats. Let them be cool crystalized pokemon sure, and leave the hats at home. Oh well, here we are. However…I will say this, if we DO NOT get a terastalized onix by the end of this era, I don’t care how good anything is, I will consider pokemon to have utterly failed in their DUTY to the children of the pokemania days. I’ve waited for crystal onix to appear somehow somewhere. It feels like they are mocking us. (Onix is not in the scarlet and violet games).
omg thats awesome! need artist if you know. that’d make a cool art to print out and layer in 2.5D
Unpopular opinion: I never liked Charizard, ever since I got my Pokémon Blue game back in 1999.
I loved the Bulbasaur line because I’m passionate about plants and flowers. Today, Venusaur looks like a big ugly frog (even worse in the base set), but its first in-game sprite was really nice. I love Blastoise because who doesn’t love turtles? However, its in-game sprite was really bad to me. My favorite of the evolutionary line is Wartortle because I love its tail and ears, which make it feel like it could fly through the clouds. I didn’t like Charizard because it always looked mean/angry and not very mobile because of its shape.
That said, I liked its in-game sprite and the one on the game box, as well as the one for Blastoise. And of course, I loved Charmander because of the anime. But since Charizard wasn’t a real dragon and was a poor Pokémon to play with, I always preferred the Dragonite line.
However, because of the Pokémon TCG, I started to love some Charizard cards. But I still don’t love the Pokémon itself.
Solrock and Lunatone were not in Sun and Moon lol.
As much as I love Komiya, I do somewhat agree. At a certain point, the art began to have all that wild acid trip vibe with crazy colours everywhere. I DO prefer the earlier stuff where it looked like surreal reality.
That said, artists do change their style about as is their right. And I still enjoy all Komiya artwork but yeah, the older stuff is my favourite.
Could be worse anyway…I was REALLY not a fan of how Himeno’s style evolved from the lovely, instantly-recognisable hand drawn to the rather nondescript, “meh” digital art of today. Again, it was totally her right to do that but it’s still a shame.
The set has some of the craziest artworks in Ex era, it’s no wonder it’s such a popular one. Ngl, the fact that there is Team Rocket everywhere helps a lot, but still, the artists participating and their artworks make this set one of the most memorable of the TCG
Those with stadium and memorable pokemon such as Pika or evolved starters ar really nice ! But I guess it’s quite niche and too expensive for many to collect
I feel like there are two types of Komiya artworks, those in his style but portraying relatively accurate proportions and morphology of the Pokemon and those with clear deformation like the gengar from 151 and some of his earlier work back in WOTC . I have to agree that most of his recent work is not my cup of tea, yet I find really nice that AR cards allows artists to show bigger and more detailed artworks like the drowzee he did, really nice card in my opionion !
The only interesting aspect of Van Gogh Pikachu is its market performance. Otherwise it’s a boring card that doesn’t deserve to be displayed, played, or loved.
Don’t really know if people geniually like the card or if they are just there for the price. I agree it’s not an outstanding artwork given the concept…
Looking through old sets, I was reminded, I once held the opinion that
Pikachu was a worthless card!
That opinion has cost me.
I mostly like it for its concept. But I might be biased, since I’m Dutch myself and went to the Van Gogh museum.
I couldn’t care less about its value or market performance. In fact, I wish it was worth a lot less at the time, since it was already out of stock when I visited the Museum halfway through the event and I had to buy it second-hand for ~100 USD at the time. Now that it’s in my collection, I care even less about its value.
Apart from the really heavy hitters, I don’t even know the value of 95%+ of the individual cards I own.

The round number of an anniversary and it’s perceived effect on the market is irrational. The 30th anniversary by itself will not do anything. It is external stuff that drives it.
The 20th (Pokemon Go boom) and the 25th (Covid boom) anniversaries wouldn’t be what they are without the help of once in a lifetime events.
