I should clarify that “Pokémon is not an RPG anymore” is kind of a loaded phrase I chose because you were asking for an inferno take. While it’s effective shorthand to communicate the basics of my feelings it’s not necessarily the point I would argue from specifically. The crux of my complaint is really that the content in Pokémon games has diminished significantly and the actual structure and mechanics of the game have been stripped down to only the most basic, minimalist version of the idea. Pokémon games used to be a 64 color box of crayons and gradually reduced to 32, 16, and now 8 colors. I guess all the primary colors are represented and I can technically use them, but it’s awfully unfulfilling when there used to be so much more in the box.
EX does mean extra, I believe the running idea around GX is that it means “giga” because giga comes after mega (Gen 7 comes after Gen 6) and when TPCi revealed the first V, they said it is a short abbreviation for “eVolve”

If every single pokemon card tanked 95% in value and stayed there for 10 years, you wouldn’t like your pokemon card collection as much as you do now.

I would be thrilled. I’d get the last few trophy cards I need to finish my collection. Also whoever is left collecting is only in it for the love of the hobby instead of flipping.

I have no idea why people think criminals only make fakes of expensive Pokemon cards, I see that sentiment repeated often. I have seen fake boxes of Jungle, Fossil, Crystal Guardians, Holon Phantoms, Majestic Dawn, Legends Awakened, Stormfront and other sets when the REAL boxes were sub-$200.I bought fake jungle packs from a big chain toystore in 2002 that contained gym Heroes stickers.
Trust me, fake product is as old as Pokemon itself and the threshold of profit required is very very low.

Pokémon cards have always been faked especially at the time of release, cards weren’t expensive either so it didn’t matter. For every 1 trophy card fake now a days there’s probably 1 million common card fakes.

if character rares and full art trainers become the new standard chase cards in future sets, it will kill the collectability of pokemon cards.
i say this as someone who loves people/humans on pokemon cards. but if people/humans become the reason to collect POKEMON cards its not a good thing long term.

I agree with you. It won’t so much kill Pokemon card collectability if character cards become the standard chase cards, but it certainly will shift the modern collecting scene more than it already has been.
However, I think the beauty of modern for many people is that it appeals to their specific interests, whatever those may be. You want full art Pokemon? You got it. You want full art people instead? You got that too. You want your favorite Pokemon to be illustrated on a card? With the size of sets now, the chances of you waiting a while for a new card are low. Shiny Pokemon? Who needs a special set once a year with shinies, when theres at least one in every set! Just want shiny cardboard? Its allllll there bro. Hell, we even have full art stadium cards and items if you want them.
I think this hobby is big enough where we can have all sorts of chase cards and special arts and everyone can find something they enjoy. The character arts are great but only because this is the second time they’ve done them. Time will tell how well they age, but right now, all we can do is sit back and enjoy the ride.
