A lot of people (mostly kids) will send in the cards just so they can see them featured on a channel they like/is popular. As those channels often require a lot of time and money to function, it lends itself to having adults run them. I think it’s less about “I want to give these cards to someone” and more about “I want to get a shoutout/see my cards on this huge channel.”
FCBM videos can also be used to promote smaller channels, you send some cards to a big youtuber who links/promotes your channel, and you get a lot more exposure.
Finally, FCBMs can be used to thank your friends. I’ve sent a couple FCBMs, but only to people who really made an impact on my collecting.
Don’t get me wrong, I think FCBMs probably aren’t the best thing for the community. But stuff like giveaways, which promote false engagement and entitlement among fans, are much worse.
I thought long and hard about making that post thinking it was far too immature. But the inner child in me couldn’t hold back lol. Lets leave the mothers out of this!
I remember the change in 2011-2012 when social media exploded. The benefit was the increase in knowledge. By and large social media is a good thing, however, there are also significant costs.
The biggest cost that completely encompasses every problem is that no one is held accountable. If someone scams, they will associate with people who either turn a blind eye, or also practice this behavior. Why focus on the merit of my decisions when I have 1,000’s of followers?
What is ultimately promoted on social media is having the cool shit, not even collecting, just having the cool card enough to take a photo. Kids get caught up in that superficiality, and are taken advantage of, because the social media “culture” reinforces that behavior.
@smpratte In regards to fcbm it’s sort of like a fan giving a baseball player a bat or something when to me it just seems like it should be the other way round, preferably signed haha. I think at the end of the day the main reason why I dislike the concept so much is I feel that people in positions of “power” are essentially taking advantage of people.
@fourthstartcg I get what you are saying in terms of exposure of smaller channels etc but I feel that the advantage is minimal considering that they normally link a channel in a description and maybe mention the person once or twice, the focus is on what they are getting for free Rater than who has so generously gifted the cards.
I had a guy say something similar. He low balled me and sent a best offer, and said this is what they are worth and he wants to talk about these cards in his YouTube page -.-
