Welcome to Elite Fourum Thread

Whatup y’all! Excited to be part of this community!

WARNING: wall of text incoming

You’ve all probably heard variations of this story a million times before - but I’m a 90s kid that spent most of the 6th grade in the back of the classroom grinding to get all of my favorite lineups in Red/Blue up to level 100.

Filling up the Pokedex, playing linked battles on my silver GameBoy Pocket, leveling up all of my favorites…I was hungry for more, so I sought out magazines, comic books, plush, anything that could scratch the Pokemon itch. Enter: Pokemon TCG.

At the time, there was only one store at my local mall that carried the cards. I bought the last few 1st Edition packs with my allowance and my dad had the great foresight to ask the manager if I could also have the empty display box (thanks dad!)

Unfortunately, the cards (even back then) were insanely difficult to track down in my hometown, but even at 10 years old, I had previous experience chasing down drops for new collectibles (via Hot Wheels & Beanie Babies). I was lucky enough to be able to track down a few more 1E packs, and I was off and running for real from Shadowless and go-forward.

PROS of being an almost teenager collecting at that time: I took great care of my cards, and everything went into Ultra Pro sleeves/loaders/pages. I also had a ton of fun and got pretty good playing the actual game at local tourneys (my first deck was a Mewtwo/Scyther/Chansey stall deck!)

CONS of being an almost teenager collecting at that time: I was a huge nerd, and eventually high school (and girls!) distracted me from completing collections. I walked away early on during Neo Genesis, not because I didn’t love it, but because between school and the incessant desire to try and be more sociable took most of my time.

When “the boom” happened during COVID, I was living overseas and was both astounded and sad that the (already steadily rising) cost of cards would mean that going back to complete my collections would be more expensive.

I began to dig more into how I could jump back into the hobby without breaking the bank (maybe getting after more modern sets?), and two things happened:
1: I felt the insatiable urge to truly complete the sets from my childhood, in the condition that I want
2: I started to fall in love with artwork from different sets, across all eras, and discovered that price doesn’t necessarily have to restrict me from collecting something that’s fun and that I love

So this is why I’m back: not only for nostalgia, definitely not for financial gain, but because it’s FUN! I’m staying away from anything that isn’t FUN for me personally, focusing on my favorites to start, and slowly looking to understand the metas of the current game, so I can put together a deck and start playing again.

Currently I’m focusing my unfinished 1E Gym Heroes / Gym Challenge sets, and modern promos (I love promo cards! not just the rare ones, but the ones with artwork that speaks to me)

Sorry for the long intro (I’m sure you all think I’m a windbagged twat) but I really am excited to be part of the best PTCG community out there.

See yall out there in the comment sections!

P.S. BLASTOISE RULEZ

Thank you!
So true how you point that out. It’s a totally different thing for a long term passion, but I feel really good about my long term prospect.

Super nice you had that realization moment, and crossed that mental barrier. I think the same goes for me. Not the time, but the fact that this is just a part of my life where I get a lot of pleasure and energy from.

Ah, the cry of the inner child. Only Pokémon can soothe them. A someone whose inner child has been sufficiently quieted now, it was worth it. Pokémon buttoned up a part of my youth that never felt finished. Very fulfilling.

Hey Guys,

Found E4 through @smpratte youtube videos. Like alot of you, I was blown away by his technical analysis, enthusiasm and love for the game. I grew up on a vegetable farm in New York (Yes there’s lots of them in NYS), and would spend my hard earn money buying booster packs of base set, jungle and fossil at my local shop. Moved to NYC after college and have worked in commercial real estate for the last 11 years.

Forgot about the game until Pokemon Go came out in 2016. Then decided to dive back in in 2021 and start investing seriously. Chasing Vintage at the moment, but realizing how wide that category is in itself. Completing raw ungraded base, jungle, fossil, as well as sealed booster packs. Next step is Japanese vintage, 1st edition and submitting cards for grading once I have a more experience.

Appreciate all the knowledge and insight so far from @smpratte and everyone on E4. The technical analysis really speaks to me from a real estate and family business perspective. I will be a life long collector/buyer and looking forward to enjoying the ride with everyone!

@Rattlesnake welcome to you too mate! sounds like we came up on the same era, just on different coasts; what is your favorite regional/NY-grown vegetable that doesn’t get enough love?

Hi guys! My name is E-Unit (Evan). My favorite Pokémon are Abra/Kadabra/Alakazam.

I just noticed this thread tonight. I’ve been in Discord for awhile and lurked here in the past.

When Pokémon Go first came out I looked back into the cards but never bought any. My older brother and I were obsessed with cards and original GB games in 1999. Costco Japanese blisters were a fond memory for me. I gave my binder to my younger cousins in 2005 because I was trying to be a cool guy and “didn’t want them anymore”. 2017 and 2018 were really great years at work and I bought a base booster box with intentions of opening. I couldn’t bring myself to open it. A little researching brought me to Evolutions and the rest is history. In the last 2 years, I’ve started diving deeper. My close friends know it’s a hobby of mine but I don’t have any friends into Pokémon.

Hoping to complete some of the Japanese promo sets over the next few years.

We grow specialty vegetables but I would have to say the most underrated is Okra IMO. Can be used in so many different cultural dishes and awesome raw as well. My favorite is Guy Lon Chinese Broccoli though. Think a much better Broccoli Rabe.

Given we’re on a Pokémon thread not a vegetable thread my favs are Kabutops, Blastoise, Archanine, Scyther.

Welcome, @E-Unit! THere are many friendly people here. Also, Abra is my favorite evo chain too. Such a cool, and actually under-appreciated bunch because of well, legal stuff. haha

Welcome @E-Unit. Glad to have you here. Just curious what Japanese promo sets are you planning on finishing? I am a promo collector myself and would love to hear about what you plan to collect. Enjoy your time here.

Cheers!

Hi all! My name is Camron (camrok37 is an old username from high school 12 years ago and I never got rid of it  ).

I started collecting Pokemon cards like mad when I was younger as well as watching the show and begging my parents to take me to the Mewtwo Strikes Back movie, and (like many, I assume), it all fizzled out once I left for college and early adulthood. I regrettably allowed for tons of my stuff (gameboy and associated games, cards, filled binders, stickers, promos, posters, you name it) to be sold off from my parent’s garage sales. I’ve been somewhat starting back at square one for a little while now, and I have been lurking here to see what people have to say without ever officially posting, so here I am!

I’ve already learned a ton just looking through the forums here, so thank you all. After researching more in the past few months, I’ve honestly fallen back deep into the nostalgia hole, or maybe that’s just the burning hole in my wallet…already spent more this month on cards than I was expecting to, so I guess I’m back at it. Thanks for letting me in the door! :+1:

Welcome to e4, @camrok37! We are happy to have you here.

I can relate to your garage sale story. I had plenty of cards/collectibles sold off in my early adolescence. :sob:

Welcome, @camrok37! Small steps. You don’t teach calculus in elementary school. You don’t buy JP promos when you’re first starting (…though I did, but I’m weird. haha )
