Was the Masaki Gengar distributed in two different ways?

I’m currently in contact with someone who claims that the Masaki Gengar was also distributed as a CoroCoro insert.

He says there are two versions of the Masaki Gengar. I haven’t been able to find any source to back up this claim, but I was curious.

Have you ever heard that the card was distributed in two different ways. One where you had to send in your Haunter, and another as a CoroCoro insert?

So the original advertisement of this campaign was done in the “Expansion Sheet Vol.3” (Green Version) Released on Tuesday, November 24, 1998. However, if I recall correctly, there were subsequent announcements made in the CoroCoro comics issue of November and December of 1998 and January of 1999. I think the campaign was also mentioned in Trainers Magazine Vol 2.

The announcement in CoroCoro comics was also alluding to collectors buying the Vending sheet, because, the Masaki PC card, which was required for the exchange was only available in the Vending Sheet.

Regardless of where you saw the advert first, the method of application was the same. Send in Masaki’s PC with the middle stage Pokemon of choice and based on what you sent, you would get the final evolution back. Since they were application based promotions, it would be highly impossible to have the card as a CoroCoro insert.

Maybe the confusion comes from seeing the campaign advert in the CoroCoro comics?, which back in the day would display adverts for other new Pokemon releases and promo cards, which would then end up as insert in future issues. Masaki campaign was very different from the regular ones.

Cheers!

Could they possibly be thinking of the Pokemon Web Gengar? I don’t know if that actually makes sense but when I read “two versions” the first place my mind went to was the normal promo and the Web reprint with the eReader frame.

I would think not, as Pokemon Web packs were purchased directly on the Pokemon Center Online website, and the set was released over two years after the original Masaki campaign ended.

Thank you for the input. I think this is the most likely scenario. He has since admitted that his sources were ChatGPT and a colleague who had told him something about it.

But it was really interesting to read the full story. Thanks
