A few months ago, caught up in some hype, I bought some mystery cubes from this guy. Back then, he had 100% positive feedback and sounded polite upon making contact.
When I received the first cube, it was semi-opened and some of the cards were spilling out. When I went through the cards, there was literally one, very damaged, base set Magneton at the front of the cube to serve as its face. The rest of the cards were all horribly damaged WOTC era commons and energies. From what I’ve heard, even the worst of these cubes has at least 4-5 holofoils but the cube I received had zero, aside from the damaged magneton on the front.
I can’t prove how or when the cube was opened, but it really looks to me like this seller is haphazardly opening these cubes, looting the foils and re-wrapping them with energies and commons. I cancelled the second order and demanded a refund after leaving some appropriate feedback. The seller obliged but I still want to warn everyone here who isn’t wise: beware these mystery cubes. There are some Pokemon Youtubers that went to Japan during the Pokemon Go craze and bought these. Many of them made videos that essentially served as ads: showing off cubes that were full of classic holofoils. Since then, I’ve experimented with multiple sellers, trying to nail a decent one. Pretty much all of the cubes that I’ve bought off of sellers in Japan and the U.S. have been borderline scams.
I’m not sure what others’ experiences have been and I’m not sure if it’s the sellers that are at fault or Mandarake itself that’s selling these junk cubes. But I think it’s prudent to sound off a warning about these products. If you’re going to try and grab a decent, sealed cube, buy from someone on eFour or another reputable seller. Many (if not most) random re-sellers of these are hoodwinking unsuspecting nostalgia-seekers out of their cash.
