U.S. Customs question.

Package from Japan via FedEx. It’s currently in Indianapolis with the following remark.

“ Clearance delay - Import
Shipment requires importer’s registration/identification number for clearance. (Examples include EIN, SSN, VAT, GST, RFC, etc.)”

I’ve already contacted FedEx and they provided a link for me to provide the requested information.

My question is has anyone had this happen before? Did you owe any tax or was your package ransacked?

Also, it may be helpful to have a giant shipping thread for Q’s like this.

Thanks!

You have to fill and send them this form and you’re good to go:

www.cbp.gov/document/forms/cbp-form-5106-createupdate-importer-identity-form

If I’m not mistaken the threshold before paying duties is $2,500 in the U.S., if you’re order is less maybe they insured it for that amount or they think Yen = USD for some reason, but most of the time it’s just a formality and you should be fine.

The threshold for any fees is $2000. If you’re using buyee or any other Japanese middleman, make sure to split up your packages so each has a declared value of $2000 or less.
