I’ve always been fond of Base Hitmonchan, but at least part of that is a very specific memory I have of that card as a kid from the very earliest phase of getting into the cards in January 1999. I was always intrigued by the background as well, as it kind of looks like it’s standing on a sphere of sorts. Definitely one of the more abstract Base Set artworks.
Very much rooting for you @hyruleguardian , and I’m thankful for all the knowledge and expertise you bring to the forum! You were one of the first people I PMed on here a couple months back when I just started buying cards again and I truly appreciate your kindness!
Hitmonchan always looked like he was on Venus or something. A planetary void. The edge of the cosmos. The jabber, the gatekeeper, keeping the door to the other side guarded from miscreants and the artless. Visionary card.
Good luck with that one man. The best discounts in the hobby being found on items with poorly written titles is a tradition as old as the hobby itself, but finding those deals with cards that valuable is pretty rare. Someone lucked out.
I have to say the Hitmonchan vs Chansey debate is a tough one.
Hitmonchan, IMO, was the star of the Base Set only format. Electabuzz was the runner-up, but Hitmonchan was the clear leader of the pack with 20 damage for 1 energy, 70 HP, and a solid 40 damage attack. Not to mention dealing super effective damage against both Electabuzz and Chansey.
But Chansey was basically a cheat code, it was free for literally any deck to just throw some Chanseys into it and use Chansey as a line of defense while building up your bench.
Ultimately though I have to give the edge to Hitmonchan. He was the focal point of the undisputed best deck in the original format (Haymaker). He could Gust of Wind an Electabuzz to 1HKO it (or 2HKO it for 1 energy). And he could take out Chansey in 2 hits. Just too good in that original format, especially before Scyther made its debut in Jungle.
Besides being often used in Haymaker, Chansey was also used in Alakazam Damage Swap, another top tier deck, along with various stall decks in 2000-2002 era, and of course Metal Chansey in 2002. It was the non-trainer non-energy card used in the *most* tournament winning decks in every format until rotation. Good luck playing Haymaker in 2002, you’d be laughed at, while Chansey remained the star of the show three years after release.
Ahhh yeah I agree with this. Hitmonchan was the GOAT specifically in the original Base Set only format, but as the game expanded, Chansey grew more relative powerful and held up better across a variety of decks.
For what it’s worth, I used to play the Alakazam Damage Swap deck. I wasn’t an NYC champion unlike some people but I did play it in a few 1999-2000 tournaments.
I had the most infuriating stall deck back in the day, made a lot of opponents draw themselves into defeat. I also had an amazingly fun bench destruction deck running the Dark Crobat line along with Sneasels, Dark Dragonite line, Darkness Energies, Scoop-ups, and Super Scoop-ups . . . that deck was brutal!
