Tracking 1999 Pokemon PSA 10 Base Set 1st Edition

how is that worthy of a PSA 10 but other cards that are perfect but have one tiny corner dot get PSA 9s? Maybe that factored into the end price

I was ready to snipe at 16k, and I DO think it was still a bargain a 20k. However, I have seen better PSA 10 copies. Little more edgewear than I like to see.

JP - Base set has eclipsed $550k barrier with 7 of the 16 holos no transactions in October.

For so many reasons mentioned, it does not appear the $20,500 on Alakazam (visible imperfections, seller w less than 20 transactions, US only sale, no marketing sale / regular eBay) would be maximizing the value of that card. However, we go with market sales, and no asterisk here. It’s not Barry Bonds 70th home run baseball level.

Nice post. Actual data point comparison. I like it

:joy:

The market determined it was worth $20.5k. Most high paying sellers are in the US anyway so I don’t see that as a big issue and even though the sellers feedback was small, it was all positive selling feedback (not just ‘buying’ feedback that doesn’t prove seller legitimacy) that anyone could have looked up. So why try to diminish the sale as if the only true and fair sales are ones that massively beat the last.

If a card breaks a new high then it is met with justifications of why it did and why it correctly has gone up in value and why it makes sense… but when a card sells for less than what is ‘expected’, whatever that means, then it is met with a bunch of reasons why that is such an inaccurate value. Markets are allowed to relax and ‘ratios’ don’t have to be set in stone.

You should see how it is if you try to buy a card on this website. Let’s say the card sells for an average of 1,000$ on ebay. 900$ is a reasonable starting offer, right? That’s what the seller would get if they sold the card on ebay for the average price, so why not start there?

Well when you post your 900$ want ad you will be immediately informed that the world record sale of that card was 1,100$ and that was 3 days ago and the market has gone up since then so you should be paying 1,300$. For the card that sells for 1000 on ebay.

They will castigate you for trying to buy at reasonable pricing because their only interest is in seeing another world record breaking sale so the value of their portfolio goes up.

You guys are right - the Alakazam sold for $20.5k. Period.

But speaking as someone who has followed these cards for years - the last sold prices (within the last few days) for Raichu is $25k, Nidoking is $15k, and Bulbasaur is $8.5k.

Those ratios won’t hold, if history is any indication whatsoever. Either the price of the Alakazam will go up relative to those other cards, or the prices of those other cards will go down.

It could go either way. Or I’m totally wrong and the price relativity of those cards is now different. We’ll just have to see.

Personally, I do see signs within the last few days that market prices are starting to stabilize. It will be interesting to see how things play out.

OMG, someone paid 8,500 for bulbasaur? Was this October20-23? Prices were popping off :open_mouth:

The sale happened yesterday. It was an eBay sale. It was sold by our own primo and the sale was confirmed by him yesterday in this very thread.

Exciting stuff… maybe demand for light packs will pick up!

What you said about markets being allowed to relax is definitely true. But also the reasons @hyruleguardian listed are real contributing factors to price. Whether or not they would’ve had a big impact is debatable though for sure. I get where you’re coming from though, some people think every sale has to be a giant gap up from the previous one or something.

I mentioned earlier this was my bulbasaur and it has been paid for and shipped. Waiting for funds to clear but yea, real transaction/it happened

This whole thread is aids. Just a bunch of people who own certain cards trying to bump the value of them. “This card just sold for X privately” lucky i have one already etc. @vintageprotan and @karmaawhoree are right. This site used to be about helping people find good prices for cards. Now its just about making everyone beat the last sold price.

Some people have a vested interest in the price of the cards being as high as possible (and since I own the cards I am one of those people), other people who would like to own the cards are in the opposite camp. In a public discussion forum it makes things tough.

So I acknowledge it’s not a great look when I own the cards and say anything along the lines of “X card seems like it was undersold relative to other sales we’ve seen.” Even if that’s my actual analysis, I’ll be mindful of how that looks and will probably avoid commenting on things like that going forward.

Ultimately, this thread is just meant to keep track of prices and everything else is just noise that you can come to your own conclusions about.

Charmander down to 3,850.00

I´m not sure why accurate price tracking is “aids”, it is what it is. All tracked prices are verified, they are not made of thin air.

No one here has time to help you find your happy place prices, nor did they ever. It’s laughable that you think anyone is obligated to help you personally find “good” prices.

Salt.

I’ve been following this thread and I think everyone here is on top of the market prices and provide the rest of us with very valuable info.
My question: I just saw a psa 9 mewtwo first edition sell at auction for 4952.00 on ebay. Sounds really low in comparison with the prices being mentioned everywhere. What’s everyone s take on that?.
Was it the low cert#? Market softening?. Am I missing something?
Thanks

I’m not a big fan of the growing financial mindset in the hobby either and yes, this thread is a bit of a circle jerk of the 1st Ed Base collectors

But frankly, so are many other set/era specific threads (4th print, ex era, Japanese, XY evolutions etc.). Let them have their fun if they like to talk about prices and stuff. If you really hate this thread that much, just ignore it or start your own thread about your favorite collecting niche
