To Keep Sealed or To Open...that is the question.

Guys, I need some opinions. I have an unopened Japanese Red vs. Green gift box deck set and am wondering if I should keep it sealed for awhile or if I should open it and try getting the rare cards graded. I always have a constant battle going on in my head whether to keep things sealed or open them for grading. I would appreciate the opinions on both!

Almost everything sealed isn’t worth opening if you are just trying to compare the benefits of grading to keeping it unopened.

That being said, the experience of opening a sealed product can make the loss of monetary value worth it, and that’s what makes opening old product so fun and nostalgic.

If you’re doing it from a purely value standpoint and not for the feels I would keep it sealed

Alright, let me see if I understood this correctly. I am definitely looking at it from a value standpoint, so you think it is best to keep the Red vs. Green gift set box sealed instead of opening it and grading the rare cards inside? I have just heard that grading cards brings them more value rather than keeping them sealed, but I have met so many people that love old, sealed pokemon material.

If value is your main concern, sealed almost always wins…

However you can win every now and again, always a risk when opening sealed pokemon product!

Thank you for the reply. You mentioned every now and then you can win by opening them. Does this mean that you only win by opening something if the cards inside are graded to a 10?

I don’t know much about the red vs green box specifically, but keeping things sealed is typically the way to go. An average booster box for example, is worth more than the cards it contains. Even taking grading into account, you would have to get extremely lucky with the PSA 10’s to come out on top.

That is exactly why I am always hesitant to open sealed material. I may keep it sealed and just hunt for the red vs. green cards already graded for a good price, so I can have both of them.

Naw, open it. The fun is more worth it than the money.

I never say this about sealed goods…

But that screenshot suggest something else…

It’s worthwhile to open these boxes and grade the cards. But it’s risky.

Last year there was an inefficiency in the market. I found it and exploited it. I opened about 10 boxes of 1st edition jungle and fossil bought for $350-$450 each. They could easily be opened and graded for a good profit in most cases. They now go for $500+ and I have seen as high as $800 at times for them, and perhaps the screenshots show a similar case where some sealed product is being valued for too little compared to the sealed product in which it is contained.

Thanks for the info guys. However, I am still torn between keeping it sealed or opening it up to grade them. I am rather new to eBay, so I am curious if anyone knows how to look up past auctions to see what past cards from this set have gone for?

You can always crack a sealed item open, but you can never reseal it. So if you’re torn, don’t crack it.

Open it!! Sealed products are lameo and they are hard to preserve and take up space

It may be lame to keep them sealed but if your main concern is value then it is probably best to keep it sealed. There is no guarantee you will score PSA 10’s.

I think I am just going to look for another box at a cheap rate and then open one, or maybe even look for the holos from that set at a low price, so I never have to open the box. Pokémon decisions are harder than my actual ICU nursing job haha.

Sometimes keeping things sealed is more of an OCD situation. If it will haunt you later then just keep is sealed, plus you already know what cards are in there.

I know, but I lack the experience in selling to know if people prefer graded cards vs. cards sealed inside a box…

Or so you’re purely a seller.

Get out of my face.
