Thumbs down button?

Would love to see one of these added :sunglasses: thoughts? Sometimes I just want to passively disagree instead of responding.

That is all.

No rarity is the real 1ed. :joy:

I hope not. A thumbs down button will inevitably lead to much more animosity on the forum, because instead of commenting and providing a rationale on why someone disagrees with another person’s comment, they will feel inclined to simply thumbs down the comment. The writer of the original comment will then feel discouraged and angry because they received disapproval without proper reasoning. A thumbs down button is also not nuanced enough, as it doesn’t show whether someone disagrees with the comment on a factual basis, whether they think it’s a stupid comment or whether they have another reason. The original commenter will always assume the worst though, so while a thumbs up button can live with a lack of nuance (as approval is generally a positive thing), a thumbs down button is not suited for proper internet conversation.

@r2d287,

I couldn’t agree more (on both comments)! Oh wait…dammit there is a thumbs up button so I guess I didn’t have to respond.

LOL, just kidding. You make some good points.

if you’re going to disagree with someone, you have to be willing to take the praise/ flame from your comment. no hiding behind thumbs down - no risk, no reward.

This is my exact thoughts. I think this forum works great as it is.

In all seriousness, I know that it doesn’t make a ton of sense to add a thumbs down…

But… sometimes I just want to smash a dislike without having to articulate my thoughts

You’re talking about my no rarity comment aren’t you :joy:

No, this was settled in 2018.
I’m talking about the downvote button aka inflammatory targeted trolling with no benefit. I see no upsides to having a dislike button and 1000 problems with it. This is a discussion forum, the like button is there because typing up a post agreeing with someone is redundant but to disagree you should put forward your counter-thoughts.

We can’t even have extended discussions on certain topics here because they always devolve into unproductive noise. Adding a dislike button is like throwing gasoline on a fire.

thumbs down votes will eventually lead to a circle jerk where everyone has the same opinion

Fair point, I kinda look at it like YouTube though. Ok guys, it was a bad idea… Wall of text, here we come!

I think you’ve earned commenting/posting with having an embedded no rarity reference/remark, so that goes without saying

I was once a moderator for a forum that had over 2,000 active members that decided to do a trial of thumbs down/thumbs up votes.

It ended up being a popularity contest and causing unnecessary drama. I wouldn’t recommend it - we eventually removed it after 3 months.

The thumbs up button alone is bad enough. Are you liking the post? Are you agreeing with the post? Are you leaving a read receipt? Are you sucking up to authority? Are you someone who likes all of your friends’ posts without even reading them?

Fortunately a thumbs up doesn’t tend to spur on any drama or actively discourage posting - a thumbs down on the other hand very much does.

A thumbs down button would just make people mad

No point of thumbs down, If you don’t agree with someone or like a comment, move on. If you agree or like, thumbs up is available, simples. Its about positive vibes here
