Likes on the left side

Do you like having the “like count” indicator on the left side?

  • 1 - Hate it
  • 2 - Dislike it
  • 3 - No strong opinion

Me creature of habitat. Me struggle to look to left when trying to gage how I can be a part of the popular opinion.

What’s worse is the pop up thing. Why did they remove the ability to click and just see the population overlay right there. Simple, clean, condensed. A little grouping right where it belongs under the post. You can click again for it to disappear. Instead it now plays as an ad-like pop up, you’d have to scroll through it to see everyone? Just terrible. You used to be able to click and boom, there’s all the data. That’s the theme of discourse development. Let’s click to more to see things we used to see right away.

But it’s also terrible aesthetic. If it were to stay I wouldn’t engage with clicking like or looking at who liked things anymore. Might as well not even be there. On mobile it is horrific, and on desktop it still pops up to block text, unlike the better version before where it is non-invasive.

I really don’t think it matters. I don’t think people are gonna be on the forum and be like, “man, I really love this forum, but the like counter is on the left side : ( that means I can’t engage with what people post because the counter is on the left side, and I sure do wish I could interact with it, but alas, the like counter is on the left side so I cannot : (((( “

Plus anyone who signs up that’s new wouldn’t know the difference anyway.

I think it’s neat and I say we try it out for a bit and see how we fall into it

Edit: there was a post below where I had to call upon the use of my left thumb in order to see who liked a post and it freaked me out. It felt weird. It’s like you know when you’ve been starting your car the same way since forever, but then you think about it too much one time and it throws off your rhythm and you’re sitting there wondering what part you missed or have to go back to only to realize half way down the road that your e-brake is still on. It was kinda like that.

Imma change my vote

Tally on the left when interacting with the right like feels a bit disconnected, it was better as one

This is one where I just don’t understand the reason, it was so clean before, the update feels regressive.

You know, as I was looking at this post, I couldn’t help but look at the post above and see that it has a like on it, though I didn’t like it myself. I didn’t want to stretch my thumb all the way over so I called above the movement of my left thumb…and imma be honest I didn’t like it.

I think you’re right

Okay i am the only one seems to love it. The main reason is while checking who are the people liked the post which i previously liked, it used to be tough as i need to carefully click at certain position to view the members without making my like go unlike..

Now at left side it shows all the liked people and it’s actually good. Idk i loved it may be a visual change or something could be good but neverthless i loved that the views and liking position is seperated..

Edit: well change in position may cause change in the action we do but I prefer using both hands as a good exercise

I’m stubborn and resistant to change. Therefore I hate it

It’s redundant but also worse.

I think moving them to the left adds nothing.

However, I also am sure there’s a reason why that’s happening. I wonder what solution is possible given the recent updates and fixes to the bug mentioned in the other thread. Is having the count next to the icon on the right just not an option?

@pfm Is this a possible alternative?

  • Like icon to click like
  • Number is a separate drop down/up

I think it’s ergonomically a bit challenging

I do like being able to press the button and see who liked the post, I feel like the modal pop up requires one more click that takes up more of the screen than I want versus the previous way to see who liked it

I don’t really mind but it feels a bit weird for the like button to be on the right and the counter on the left.

A better alternative would be to not have a pop up at all. Or if it was it was a little square housing the same format as previous so at least you can see all likes within one window without having to interact, scroll, then click away to be able to read.

Persistent count under Like and Reply that can be expanded/collapsed

Remember how the admin team didn’t want to bring back signatures because of clutter and spacing below posts? They refused for this reason, and look at this way more egregious example of clutter and spacing/blocking issue.

Just before this change we could expand and collapse a condensed, avatar-only square showing all with one click. Perfection. Even if it looked like your mockup it still takes up a lot of space, there is no point in showing the names of members (we all know them and even if you don’t you can hover and see them no problem). Whatever, I’m just saying it was perfect and beloved exactly the way it was.

I think everyone can agree this is a counterproductive change, making things worse. There are timeless aspects of a forum interface. Things that can’t be changed. These people making these changes to discourse are the same kind of people that made the pointless changes to cars like this

Look, I know to them it was to make changes to other forums that utilized multiple reactions, but there’s ways of addressing that without ruining forums that don’t use emoji reactions. We are classy, we need not that crap.

I will try out a plugin/fix soon but I want people to see the difference before I roll it out
