Base set zard may be the blue eyes white dragon, but these 3 are:
The Green, Blue, Red Version Box arts
Japanese only - we all know it gives it an aura
ancient as hell
Feels more like a trio than base set which has other holos
basically obtained in the 90s through a series of puzzles like knowing they even exist, getting the magazine in japan with the mail in slip and mailing something in
You were only supposed to be given one (you got to choose between red, green, or blue)
top 3 are nice arts and have some literal god-sense in the lore but gotta disagree too modern and easy to obtain. more akin to actual god in yugioh opposed to egyptian card cards imo
I don’t want to prove you wrong, these are very iconic artworks indeed. However, the fact that these were also released with the CD promo campaign kind of makes them very abundant and also reduces the ‘aura’. There is no way anyone can distinguish between the 2 releases. I think if these cards were only tied to a single campaign, then maybe they would have been even more iconic?
It is possible that these were not hard to get or apply. I think mailing something seems very tideous now but was very commonplace back in the day. The info on how to do all this was easily available in the Pokemon Fan Club magazines and the process was straightforward.
Yeah the discussion is more for fun - and to be fair many egyptian god cards were printed in real life too
Re: obscurity - I can assure you that here in the US, especially as a kid, there was a near zero percent chance of doing this or knowing it existed. Most fans still dont know they exist
Curiously the Egyptian God cards fused end being “Holactie the Creator of Light” while the Legendary birds fused end being … an amorphous monstrosity …
I second this! The legendary birds feel more similar to the egyptian gods, being mythical creatures above other Pokemon (especially considering Kanto alone), sharing the same palette, and being a actual trio.
Okay I like where this is going but if it’s the bird trio it has to be these cards - though one nit is the aren’t really available to the public which the egyptian gods were since they could be pulled in packs
I think this is because this was not meant for people outside of Japan. These promos were released in the very nascent stages of Pokemon where this kind of growth and reach was unknown . So yes, not really meant for anyone other than the local population.
This confuses me a bit since as per your OP, neither of the trio you stated could be pulled from packs. Even more so, you emphasize on the obscurity and difficulty to get them.
Re: second point - fair! though the trade campaign cards were allowed in tcg decks while jumbo bird trio, phone cards, and stuff like ishihara were not
I think this is just because the art from this was used on several products including base set packs, the base holos don’t have that much of a relation to each other while these artworks were used on english gen 1 games, boxes, and packs. These artworks were the poster children of several products in gen 1 which probably makes the cd promos feel nostalgic.
On the other side base holos exist, they don’t have much relation they just are some holos in the same set, sure they are there but there probably weren’t any mainline English products that would have included them, someone can correct me on that if I’m wrong
These are cool cards but as others have mentioned I think that the bird trio would have been more accurate
Also if you need an Egyptian god Lucario is based off of Anubis
