I’m not sure if this has ever been discussed here before but as I keep hearing it frequently I thought it might be worth mentioning. I’m just curious to hear people thoughts and opinions as to why people say “pokeman” instead of pokemon.
I assume I’m not the only one that hears this, it has to be more then just my surrounding geographical regions (eastern shore of MD, USA). Its mostly older/middle aged/elderly people I hear say it. The only thing I can think of is that that generation grew up with pacman haha. Perhaps they are used to saying that and cant get pokemon in their heads? Both start with the letter “p”, involve little creatures, and both end with the similar ending minus the vowel difference.
For instance my step dad (57 years old), just last week i was discussing with him the price of a base 1st ed. Charizard and how it brings figures in the several thousands of dollars. I asked him his thoughts on a few things and he said “i cant tell you anything, I have no opinion on pokeman cards”. But since I’ve been collecting the last 2 years I have used the term “pokemon” around and with him numerous times. He has to know it’s Pokemon, there’s no way he can forget that, it’s like it’s stuck in his head to say man instead of mon, or he just refuses to do so for some reason haha.
I remember 20 years ago this happening with adults as well too!
Anyway, just curios to hear people’s thoughts/theories!
I also hate when an s is added the end to make it plural. My biggest peeve is not pronouncing it with the “é”. Maybe because I have the accent in my name too.
When people say Pokeman, it’s usually done in a condescending tone to undermine the hobby or the brand in general. I’m sure there are some instances of ignorance to the actually name, but I’d guess most uses fall into the former.
This I have noticed, I agree. I often wondered if they were making fun of me slightly in a way. But I always have given people the benefit of the doubt
Hahaha right. I’ve never corrected or asked some one that said it. I have never wanted to come off as rude or overly confrontational in that circumstance
“Pokeymon” irritates me too. Although for some reason, I’m totally cool with “Pokuhmon,” and I usually say it that way too. I don’t know anybody who consistently actually says “Pokaymon.”
Poke your mom is one of my favorite variations, although none of them bother me. What does bother me is people tacking an -s on the end to make the plural form of a specific species of Pokémon.
They got the name right but the used the old guy shtick by claiming something they don’t understand is the reason the world is falling about. What morons.
