The rise in package theft/damage - share best practices

I see more and more concerns about package theft. PSA, Gamestop, postal services, Fedex, and even just dishonest people on the other side of a shipment or return shipment are causing issues. People are losing lots of money to this.

I’ve always been an advocate of paying for good shipping, and paying for good packaging. Skimping on this leads to issues and always has. I hope we can share some best practices to overall raise the bar on quality of how we ship things and put more value on shipping than we do. If this thread becomes a decent repository of good ideas I’ll try to put the best stuff in in the OP.

In an ideal world, none of this should be required, but we live in a very dishonest world right now.

Pay the extra for tracking
Pay the extra for a signature requirement
Pay the extra for increased insurance

Always get a receipt of drop off.
Don’t just leave a package on the front desk even if its prepaid postage. Hand it off, make sure they scan it in. Yes you may have to wait in line. But some random person can and will just go in and scoop packages from their pile of drop offs. I’ve heard of it happening before.

Get a locking mailbox.
I recently did this. Big peace of mind. It just makes things that much safer.

Security tape

With the rise of delivery services stealing from packages, this protects both sides of the shipment. Lots of versions of this kind of tape. You can even get a custom design on yours(branding!) the important thing is to keep it incognito. Don’t get tape that says “security” or “tamper seal” etc. on it since this can technically be bypassed. So don’t telegraph it to a would be thief.

Porch camera
Porch pirates are also on the rise. Even having a camera at all helps. Just make sure you can see potential car plates from the installed angle. Theives will not be identifiable from their face even if they don’t cover themselves. I won’t suggest security systems, but some are better than others. DYOR, I’ll look into it myself eventually.

Quality protective packaging
I defer to sellers on this one more than myself. But there are issues that have occured with poor handling too. So protect from general abuse of your packages. Buyers remember the good ones who do this.

Oke bai

I haven’t seen much in Pokémon. I have seen it a ton in sports. A lot of cards being taken out of packages

What I’ve seen more in Pokémon is card card stores being broken into

I recall a significant amount of people over the past two years having their fedex shipped Pokemon Center orders ripped open and stolen.

If you work in an office that can receive packages, it’s a good idea to send it there. FedEx, UPS, and probably others will deliver during business hours and prevents porch pirates.

I always include an extra copy of the shipping label taped to the inside on the thing I am shipping, this way if your package or label is damage, there’s a good chance they will use the backup.

Pokémon center needs to make their labels and packaging non descript

I like to spend on faster shipping before insurance. Less time for something to go wrong with next day air.

I write ‘Emerging Powers Pokémon cards’ in the customs declaration box.

On a serious note I second the express mail options, less time in the system!
