A Mega Rant (a public service announcement) on Fedex

Ok people. I want everyone on E4 to stop using fedex. For the LOVE OF GOD stop using this TRASH company. I want all sellers of pokemon card on ebay to stop using fedex. I wish it would happen. Random internet users stumbling upon this by accident? Don’t use fedex.

I have been forced to receive packages from this company far, far too many times in the last 5 years. I have way, way too much experience with them. And guess what? It’s always bad!

What I do for a living: I work camera department on tv and commercial productions. All the shows you watch, all the commercials you see, all the movies you screen, they all rely on productions shipping gear to and fro. Because you can’t ship thousands of pounds of gear through usps, it must be shipped privately. Fedex has a monopoly on this market. Literally no one in the industry uses UPS. They might as well not exist. (They’re trash too anyway, just not nearly as bad)

Just this week. Out of maybe about 100 productions I have worked on, this week is probably about the 50th (conservative guess, likely more) where fedex has lost half the production’s gear–it is usually delayed by a couple days in this scenario, which is just as bad for the production, no difference in outcome. This has significantly made my job harder as on this particular production I am in charge of the camera gear. I’ve had to go rent the stuff locally and do an inexplicable amount of extra tedium in getting non-package gear synced up and aligned with production’s gear that is spec’d out a certain way, uses very specific combos etc. Different brands, different things have to replace the necessary gear and they don’t match. It’s a F***** nightmare, an already stressful job made remarkably difficult and sleep draining etc. My prep day was supposed to be no more than 6 hours. It took 12 hours today. I received no extra pay after the 6th hour. Fedex cost me 6 hours on just this one occasion after many, many others in the past.

And fedex does this ROUTINELY.

Now, onto point 2/3. I have really invested into my business this year, and have bought a lot of gear myself. What do most sellers on B&H and ebay ship with? Fedex, of course. From delays to more delays, which only notify you mid day when you’ve already arranged to be home (if you’re even available) only to find out it’s gonna (maybe) be the next day, to laughable “delivery windows” of 8am to 12pm, ooooops, we mean 12pm to 4pm, haha, nope, now it’s 4pm to 9pm… and of course the occasional delivery of a signature required package left at my door for a 2k piece of equipment left out in the blistering heat and free to be stolen, done so when I’m not home, then of course when I am home they heed the obligation and attempt 3 times only to return to sender since I CANNOT HOLD AT LOCATION BECAUSE OF SHIPPERS REQUIREMENTS. WTF? Absolute insanity. Like unfathomable insanity.

Now example 3, and why I’m making this psa. Why the absolute insane hell would a pokemon seller on ebay use fedex for a card? USPS is 1/3th to even 1/5th the price, offers FAR more consistent timings on their estimates–I can’t even remember a single time in the past 2 years with 100x the amount of packages as fedex that they didn’t deliver on the 2 day time window they promised for priority mail–the list goes on. Most of the time any given recipient knows when their postal service comes, as they have established routes and you can rely on them coming around a certain time. They HOLD AT LOCATION when you aren’t home for a signature requirement, and guess what, naturally hold it for 14 days, not NONE if they attempted 3 times like fedex.

I’ve had way too many ignorant sellers on ebay use fedex and it’s been just as much a nightmare as it has been for my professional experience with fedex. This card in particular, they claim they attempted twice–only once did a notification say “out for delivery”–and will try one more time before returning to the bloody sender. I cannot, I repeat, I cannot even request to hold at the location right down the street so I can pick it up. The shipper’s requirements yet again preclude this option. Why on god’s earth this is even an option is as absurd as letting a blind and deaf man fly a commercial passenger aircraft with 300 passengers.

I’ve just hastily thrown this together so I can’t think of the innumerable additional examples and reasons you SHOULD NOT use fedex. Oh, like the dude on this forum who got 300k worth of cards stolen by fedex and then auctioned off by them. No, this isn’t embellished. Fedex sends a measly $100 check and then poof magically the cards show up on some ebay seller’s page within a year.

I beseech thee. Do not, just don’t. Use anything else. If you’re international, use your national post. If to the US, use national post and let it hand itself off to usps. If you live in a country where you claim it’s not feasible and fedex is your only option, I’m sorry, truly sorry. They don’t deserve the business, they are the worst business in existence. They are scum.

Don’t use fedex.

Insert shakespearean dramatic poem about why thy fedex is the dearth of all things good, all things competent, all things right with the world.

Have a good day. Don’t use fedex.

When you think it may be a good idea to use fedex, ducks fly together

Is the reason because Fedex drivers are contractors and not employees?

Sounds ripe for disruption otherwise if they are that bad at their service.

Always interesting to read these rants as a European because FedEx at least where I live in Germany is probably the most reliable and punctual shipping company (they only ship out the international Express packages themselves though, so it’s not really comparable to places where they operate as a normal shipping company).

That’s cause you live in Germany. Germans are just punctual. Germans are good at shipping things.

Employees. It’s a company problem, top down issues, all the way down. Down to the carrier level too.

Germans are punctual

Say that again when you have traveled with our long distance trains haha

Fedex is donkey shit.

They delivered my cards ($5k+) from PWCC to someone else’s house. I asked them if they could tell me where their dipshit driver dropped it off. Nope, they couldn’t help me. The agent actually got mad at me for being upset about it.

It was supposed to be a signature required delivery. But the driver decided it wasn’t necessary and dropped it off without signature.

A few days later, they called me to inform me once more that they can’t help me.

I hope they all shit their pants.

Does PWCC exclusively use FedEx?

How does such a pathetic company garner so much business without actually doing its job?

This is not to challenge your post, but only to understand the situation more.

How much is Fedex Express vs Fedex Ground?

Having done that last month, the trains there are still more punctual (or closer to punctual) than when I used to take the train here in the states.

Now I am nervous too use PWCC if they exclusively use FedEx , as I live in Canada and not sure if anyone else has had troubles with pwcc using FedEx too ship too them as I haven’t had the best experience with FedEx when I buy other items online so I only really use UPS but they like you said have there faults too

Ugh , I guess the upside for me is that I can ask for my item to be picked up at an ear by FedEx location. Yet still , will it get there ??? Can these FedEx employees actually look out for packages that look like cards , from pwcc even ? It’s really troubling

Okay, fair enough, but using US trains as a comparison is probably unfair for any European trains

FedEX is trash.

I once had to drive 50 minutes out of my way (25 there, 25 back) to pick up a $3,000 package because the driver left a note on my door stating that I wasn’t home. I was home, but they never knocked or rang the doorbell.

I also had a nosy FedEX employee ask probing questions about my packages and about the sender. They also mentioned that another person down the road received the same packages from the same sender when I do, which is incredibly unprofessional and borderline illegal(?). The sender was PSA, but they used a generic name and address to reduce attention to the packages. :upside_down_face:

In the Netherlands it is the same, I have nothing to complain about fedex over here. It is a tad more expensive than other services, but they have a higher percentage of delivered packages than others (but other services are great as well).

Actual Fedex experience.

I was in Japan for worlds, and a CGC reslab package finished and was Fedex’d. I obviously wasn’t home but I knew I was within the 5 business day window to pick it up. I had the delivery notice when I got home, went out to pick it up. For some reason they left it at a Staples like 20 minutes away. I went to Staples. They are scrambling to find my package (they can’t). They have a record of it being there but no idea where it went. They suggested I call Fedex. This never ends well.

I call Fedex. The lady tells me the package is at the Staples. I tell her it wasn’t there. She gives me the address to the Staples. I tell her I’m literally outside and it’s not there. She says it was probably picked up by Fedex (early for some reason) and delivery will be reattempted. She said to just wait. I’m out of options so I say it’s all good. I verified my phone number with her, I believe I gave her my email address. She said to just wait and I’ll be notified when it gets redelivered.

A week goes by with no word. I decide to call Fedex again. BY SOME MIRACLE I get in contact with the most helpful Fedex customer service agent I’ve ever spoken to. She says my phone number is missing a digit :expressionless: and that’s why I wasn’t notified on anything. I guess somehow CGC screwed it up and also the last customer service agent didn’t actually verify my number. This new one was super kind. Fixed my number, put a note in, told me exactly how long I had before it would return to CGC. In the end I had to go to the distribution facility to pick it up, which is a good 40-60 minutes to get there and back. I actually did that phone review they ask you to do after the call and I said, with tears rolling down my face, that she was the most helpful Fedex employee I’ve ever spoken to and she immediately deserves a raise.

Other fun Fedex experiences:

  • sending me a customs bill a week after I had received the package
  • not accepting any form of customs payments during covid other than reading out my credit card number over the phone
  • being transferred to 3 different international departments to get a refund on a conference poster, no one I talked to had any idea how to do it. I gave up after an hour
  • > $1k in furniture from two different orders :sparkles: magically vanishing :sparkles: despite being marked as delivered. My condo building checked the security tape and confirmed no delivery. No recourse options at all given by Fedex. No answer to “how do I prevent this from happening again in the future”

Yes I have also received a customs bill from Fedex several weeks after receiving a parcel. Found it crazy at the time.

Here in the UK, we don’t get much at all delivered domestically by Fedex. Can’t remember the last time I had anything from them anyway.

Although there was one time - going back a few years - when a parcel was left by Fedex at a house right down the other end of the street, rather than next door, and there was no card/note through our door. The man from the other end of the street (who we didn’t even know) came up over a week later with a parcel, asking us if we were ever going to come and collect it from his house! How were we to know it was there? Useless.

Unfortunately for us in the UK, Fedex took over the delivery company TNT. TNT were already rubbish and now they are even worse.

There isn’t a better shipping option than FedEx international priority. It consistently arrives faster than any other option. I also live relatively close to a hub so perhaps that increases the service quality.

No Fedex shills allowed in here.

When Fedex works, it’s amazing. As soon as I need to get a customer service agent involved, its game over. I’ve been on the phone with them so many times. In contrast, I don’t think I’ve ever needed to call DHL or Canada Post/USPS

1+ on the VAT bills, I think my record is something like 4 weeks, expiration was 2 days after I received it.

Last time I had a package from UPS I actually got a message from a Fedex number to pick up the package at a chinese grocery that I think serves as a DHL hub. Gotta love it.

From my own personal experience and the ancedotes of others, I’ve noticed that FedEx is far more likely to ‘lose’ packages or have them arrive tampered with. (I will never forgive whatever FexEx employee stole my 3ds I had sent in to Nintendo for repairs.) And good luck getting FedEx to hold any accountability, even if the package was insured. This is all speaking as the person recieving packages, I can’t imagine what a nightmare they are to deal with as a seller if an issue comes up.
